Well, that's part of the authenticity of the novel.
I think actually, I don't mean to second guess the novelist.
I don't know him or what was in his mind, but I think he is actually aiming for that abruptness.
You go along and you read this as a war story, and then all of a sudden you're thrust into a more modern time and using the vehicle of letters between the two people.
And I think you're meant to be jarred there.
and think, what?
What's this doing here?
What is this novel about?
Where is this taking me?
And then it goes back again.
I find that actually quite intriguing.
I mean, it's not a new idea in literature, but I think that was pulled off quite well, whether the result is to people's, the reader's satisfaction or not.
Well, the reader will have to read it to the end to find out.
But even Sydney makes an appearance in the novel.
