BBC Inside Science
The science behind hantavirus

Se, jota taitaa tehdä, on Tetsu Harimoto, postdoctoral research fellow Viis Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering Massachusetts.

Should Pluto become a planet again?

Now over to Roland Pease, who's been investigating the impact of last year's events in the remote fjords of Alaska. A massive tsunami, the second largest ever recorded, apparently, tore through a remote Alaskan fjord called Tracy Arm last August, according to a multi-author paper just published in Science. The raging water ripped trees from high up the fjord walls and sent seismic signals around the globe, but fortunately killed no one.

Team found a nearby seismometer had captured the tremors, speeded up here in this recording, that were radiated by the weakening rock face as fault in it developed over the previous day or two. Accelerating and culminating in a tremendous crash. The minute-long slide of the rock mass descending nearly a kilometre.

All that rock failure was preceded by the retreat of the glacier in Tracy Arm that had originally carved out the fjord's oversteep sides and then for millennia buttressed them against gravity until last August. As Dan mentioned, accelerating global warming matched with increasing tourist traffic into these spectacular landscapes may result in a deadly catastrophe unlike last year's in Alaska.

Why is Europe the fastest-warming continent?

But what is the state of US science now? It's been a tumultuous week at the top, as global science guy Roland Pease has been finding out. There's been a great deal of consternation following the sacking by the White House last Friday of the entire National Science Board, one of the top academic bodies in the United States. One of the fired board members, astrophysicist Kevin Stassen, spoke to NewsHour's Tim Franks. Was any reason given to you as to why you were fired? No.

My understanding is that every member of the board received the same three-sentence termination email and no other explanation or communication. The mass firing comes just after the Global Academic Freedom Index issued its latest annual update, highlighting a dramatic decline in academic freedom in the United States. Katrin Kinselbach, leader of the European Collaboration, said the firings were in line with what their report documents.

The peer review Katrin spoke of has conventionally gone up to the level of national science policy in the United States, determining the direction of research for 75 years in the country. As fusion physicist turned politician, Rush Holt told the BBC last year...

The scientists would make their own decisions about how to spend this money, what research to do, and they would deliver to society the benefits. The National Science Board was part of that successful 75-year bargain between society and academia, overseeing the National Science Foundation, which spends $9 billion each year on research. Kevin Stassen again.

With no explanation from the White House of why the board's membership has been fired, there's widespread concern among researchers this represents a further politicization of academia. Katrin Kinselbach says her index shows that the decline in academic freedom in the US predates the current Trump administration, starting in 2020.

Why is Europe the fastest-warming continent?

I think the interesting tension here is that most of this science is being funded by the taxpayer. As the chair of the House Science Committee said this week, every president expects advisors to serve in a manner consistent with the executive and legislative priorities. President Trump is the person who was elected to do this stuff.

Maybe this is what taxpayers do want, is money not to be wasted on projects they think are frivolous or dangerous.

Vielä yksi asia. Olemme puhuneet paljon Yhdysvalloista.

Not a happy message from the Academic Freedom Index, a collaboration of the Friedrich Alexander University Institute of Political Science and the Wiedem Institute of Gothenburg University, led by Katrin Kinselbach. Thanks Roland. A reminder, you're listening to Inside Science from the BBC World Service.
