And we're freezing cold and damp at the back of a giant field.

And the Pope was just this tiny speck in the distance.

And what we're all waiting for is the Popemobile and him to go around.

And then it's announced at the end, because of the lateness, that there wasn't...

There was going to be no Popemobile because he needed to fly.

And apparently they can't fly a helicopter in the dark in 1979.

You know, I don't know.

It was like the most crushing disappointment ever.

And not just for us kids.

You could tell everyone, like even the nuns who were next door to us.

They'd been to a mass before.

They wanted to see the Pope up close and they'd bleed in Popemobile.

And even the Popemobile at the time was such a big thing.

And so he boogers off.

And it's now dark, miserable, cold, wet.

We haven't ever seen the Pope.

And everyone, you know, the idea originally had been that he'd go by each corral and then you'd let that corral out and it'd be all very orderly.

But now everyone just left together and it was chaos.

And we had to walk for hours in the pitch dark down Borings to get to the bus.

We were all crying and cold and miserable.
