And in Castletyman Woods that weekend, there was another discovery.
It was by a friend of the Plunkett family from Ringsend who had gone to British Bay to join the search.
These were the boots that the kids had found and started playing with five days previously.
Detectives from Garda headquarters were now involved.
Everyone was realising this was serious and they were now joining the dots.
Wicklow Garda and Nicky Crennan, who met the two men burning clothes in British Bay in the last episode.
But where were they?
Nobody knew.
Back at the Plunkett family home in Ringsend, there was a constant flow of people coming through the house.
The local priest came to say mass in the house.
The neighbours were so good.
The house was so small.
It was very easy to fill.
So it always looked like there was so many people there.
The murder squad, a specialised guard unit at the time, were called in to lead the investigation.
The detectives were back and forth in the house all the time and taking statements from everybody.
14-year-old Kathleen was in the girls' bedroom when detectives came to take some of Elizabeth's possessions and bedclothes.
Blankets and pillows and sheets and our clothes and our handbags and all that.
Being thrown into the public spotlight like this was really difficult for the Plunkett family and their first experience with the media was not good.
