Do you think that changes in a majority?
Does the prime minister feel, I don't know, that he's got more time, he's got more sea room?
policies balance out more to reflect the reality of this very diverse coalition inside his caucus?
Or is this a technocratic prime minister?
I don't say that pejoratively, but someone who has a strong theory of the case and is going to pursue his particular interests and as a majority prime minister will
rule his caucus and rule parliament like the unelected king that he is.
But very, very large deficit spending also helps in this regard, Andrew, because unlike Jean ChrΓ©tien, he's gone for an almost $80 billion deficit outside of a cyclical downturn, outside of...
any of the normal economic reasons that you would court a deficit that rivals those that were courted during COVID for the obvious reasons of a global pandemic.
So is that how you see him squaring this circle going forward?
It's a chicken in every pot.
There are simply tens of billions of dollars that will be showered.
It really doesn't matter because the progressives in the Liberal Party will get their film and television credits, will have special programs for constituency X and constituency Y, which is the kind of brokerage politics of the Liberal Party at its essence.
Do you think he could get a sharper pencil out this time?
On a tax base and tax rates that have not changed to reflect these new spending priorities.
But why not hire taxes to actually reflect the burdens that are being asked of the country and Canadians, especially men and women in the armed forces?
So these are the questions I have for you, Andrew.
Is this where, with a majority, Mark Carney could get serious?
He could say, look, I'm going to add two points to the GST because we're engaged in this massive once in a generation or once in two generations rebuilding
of our defense and security capacity.
I'm going to lower corporate taxes and others because we do have a productivity crisis.
