And then the great financial crisis happened and he was the perfect person to explain that thing.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking, but I decided to reread The Road, not just after I had kids, but in the early days of the pandemic.
Perfect.
Yeah, it's funny because I couldn't bring myself to read Camus' The Plague, but I did decide to pick up The Road.
I remember zipping through it.
I finished it.
I just put my oldest son to bed.
He would have been three and a half, maybe four.
And as I finished, my wife was still putting our baby down.
And I'm just looking around at this empty house.
It's dark.
We live out in the country in Texas.
And I was like, I can't be by myself.
And I went into his room and I just broke down and wept.
Because, you know, the road captures both the beauty and the horror of being a parent.
That this incredible bond, you know, it's been said, like your kid is your heart running around outside your body.
