They borrowed it.
The main issue is you've got the cartridge that was developed as well.
So your 7.62x54R.
Is a rimmed cartridge.
Rimmed cartridges are notorious for not wanting to feed in magazines.
If anyone's ever shot a Mosin, you've gotten rimlock before if you didn't stack them properly in the mag.
Mm-hmm.
I mean, the fucking Dragunov shoots a rimmed cartridge too.
So it's not an insurmountable problem, but it's a problem that can't come up.
Better extraction.
Also, most of them, a lot of rifles would headspace off of the rim.
especially considering this is the origin of the field gauge as well.
Older technology, older metallurgy, the more eventually you start firing the rifle and your headspace is expected to start running away from you to a point because the metal is going to be stretching and essentially you'll be almost forging it with every time you fire little by little.
What's up?
You bow hunt.
The rim keeps the same headspace no matter what.
Because you're not headspacing off of the shoulder, you're headspacing off of the rim.
So one way or the other, you're usually not going to end up with a gun that's too far out of headspace.
Anyway.
That makes sense.
