He has put a lot of work into expanding presidential authority, finding ways of doing things which mean he doesn't have to go through Congress.
Now the Supreme Court has put a stop to that on this particular policy.
And for him, it's not just about the billions and billions of dollars that have been flowing into the Treasury in revenue from the trade tariffs or the way in which he wants to rebalance international trade.
This is a key diplomatic weapon for him as well.
He uses the threat of higher tariffs as leverage.
to get other countries to do what he wants when it comes to trying to make peace deals, or you'll probably recall he was threatening European nations with 25% tariffs if they didn't agree with his plan to take over Greenland, on all sorts of different areas.
He no longer looks unchecked or unconstrained.
He can no longer do exactly what he wants to.
Now, of course, if he finds a way around this ruling and he is able to introduce...
the tariffs as nimbly and as often as he likes by another authority, maybe he will look as though the court simply cannot stop him.
But there are other big rulings coming up on things like whether or not you are automatically a citizen if you're born in the United States, where the court also may rule against Donald Trump on that and some other big decisions.
So over the next few months, we may see he doesn't appear quite so all powerful as he maybe did yesterday.
Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy and geopolitics have laid bare the risks of extreme global integration. But more recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons. Tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.
If you look at recent polling that was conducted before this incident in Minnesota, you'll see that most people do generally support Donald Trump's immigration policies, his desire to stop illegal immigrants coming across the border and to deport undocumented migrants who are living in the United States. But over recent months, when we have been seeing more ICE agents moving into different cities and using quite aggressive tactics there, more and more people have been concerned about the method in which this is being conducted.
It seems that they don't feel that this is damaging the popularity of the Trump administration?
No, because you hear from administration officials that they are absolutely certain of the rightness of their policy, but also of their interpretation about what happened in this particular incident in Minneapolis. Almost immediately after it happened, and people had had a chance to see the videos on social media, administration officials were doubling down on their interpretation that Renee Goode caused her own death, they say, by trying to ram an ICE agent with her car. They're convinced that that's what happened.
Ja koko pÀivÀ tÀnÀÀn he ovat olleet hyvin vahvistuneita tÀstÀ. J.D. Vance on tullut White House-kysymykseen puhumaan raportteihin.
She claimed that she was part of a network of activists who were trying to incite violence against law enforcement officers. So, if anything, what's been seen by the Trump administration officials redoubles their certainty that they need to carry on with the immigration enforcement tactics that they've been using up until now.
Toisella puolella, tÀllÀ erittÀin yksinkertaisella maalla, jolla muita ihmisiÀ ovat katsoneet videon, on tullut tÀysin erilaisista pÀÀtöksistÀ siitÀ, mitÀ on tapahtunut. He ovat todella miettineet sitÀ, miten isoja agentteja toimivat. Minnesotan puheenjohtaja Tim Walz, joka on demokraattinen, sanoo, ettÀ hallituksen jÀsenet ovat tÀysin rauhoittaneet siitÀ, mitÀ on tapahtunut siellÀ.
and that he doesn't even believe that a federal investigation, when it looks into this, will have a fair outcome. And I have to say, everybody in this entrenched debate came to their conclusions very, very quickly after seeing some video footage. And before the opportunity had come for any sort of investigation to be done, people have decided that they know what happened and are very much sticking to the entrenched positions that they've taken.
