What's the purpose of that, right?
Well, to provide openings into the tower for astronomical alignments.
And there are a bunch of them.
Solar, lunar, other planetary like Venus, and the doobie window.
Doobie is the star that's on the front of...
If you took the Big Dipper and took a drink, your lips would cover doobie, that star.
And of course, that was very important in ancient times for navigation, right?
And anyway, it just goes on and on.
And the windows in the south and the east and the west windows have splays on the vertical sides.
They're angled like this to allow for those alignments.
Otherwise, they'd be straight, right?
But they're not.
Why would you do that?
to allow for these alignments because they still happen to this day.
And one of the most interesting ones is when we were there, I didn't catch it the first time I was there because I wasn't aware of it.
But Janet and I were just there this year or last year, a month ago.
And at 7.50 in the morning, when the sun is just peeking over the horizon in the eastern sky, it goes through the south window and the west window.
And that's one of those alignments.
And if you stand down the street, you can see that alignment happen.
And when you take pictures of it, you get this beautiful spray of light.
