So instead of a goblin being a, I'm guessing, neutral, evil whatever fey with stealth, I'm just getting a phrase like sneaky, backstabbing.

A sneaky backstabbing follower. So I know that if I need to sneak, backstab, or what its attitude will be, it's a follower. So it's going to acquiesce to the most powerful person in its sight. It's sneaky, so it's going to have stealth. I already have its dexterity modifier. I know its proficiency bonus. I can do all of that on my own.
