The vague recent story was that just a few human beings turned up almost by accident on the north coast of Australia.
Signs of habitation were found, and at a cave called Majabibi in the Northern Territory, dates of people living there were put at about 65,000 years ago.
Then much deeper exploration was led by a new centre of excellence in the north at Cairns, and further finds on a massive scale were discovered.
Here's one of the archaeologists up there, Ariane Lambridis, finding even the tiniest of clues.
What's been one or two of the most exciting things you've found in your explorations?
Now, you're also called the chief investigator.
And when you talk to Indigenous communities like that, do you have any difficulty interpreting what these old stories actually mean?
In other words, does it make sense to you with practice to hear these stories?
You don't think, oh, well, that's just a legend.
It's not the sort of science I'm looking for.
