A murderer doesn't probably live in the building. A murderer definitely lives in the building. Lester checked all the security footage, and no one unknown to him came in or out during the hours around Tim's murder. Isn't that great for the podcast? So, Mabel, tell us. Did you learn anything from the online world of Tim Kono?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Here's exactly what I thought. I gave Marty the script and I said, now look, when you read this script... and you come across Rick Moranis' name, just cross it out and write yours in.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Yeah. Oh, wow. I think it was John Belushi. And then it went to John Candy. I think you kind of know what we were going for there. But anyway, both were unavailable. And then the name Martin Short was... Martin Short came up. That's right. And after there was a pause... And then Chevy was last? No, Chevy was in. Me and Chevy were definitely in. It's actually Chevy and I, but whatever.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I love that you have a character backstory. Like you're Marlon Brando. What's your backstory?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Marty, tell them the title of your TV special that I love so much. I, Martin Short Goes Hollywood. But that reminded me of something I read years ago of this funniest book title I ever read. And then I thought, oh, I wish I had thought of that. And then I researched it, and there is no book called that. And I thought, maybe I did think of it.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
But it was kind of a comedy biography of a fictitious actor called I, Actor.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
No, I was just saying that you're right. You usually work with somebody, then you never see them again. But in this case, we continued to work together kind of coincidentally. through Father of the Bride movies. And did we do another movie together? Is that it?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Well, it's like you guys, you're constantly riffing off each other. It's fun, and when you work together, you start doing that all the time, and then you develop a kind of a, not only a kinship, but a style.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Well, let me add something. Only Marty has friends. Right. Right. That's my problem with these two. I benefit from his friends.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
But he's very social. Everybody wants to be with Marty. And I've told this before. I'd say, you know, if we're, for example, or if someone is plotting a dinner party in Hollywood and you invite these people and you invite Marty, and if Marty can't come, you cancel the party. Marty is the party.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Yes, right. But I have to add something. And Jason said, after the success of Three Amigos, dot, dot, dot, you really mean 20 years after the success, Three Amigos, did it become a success? It was a minor success at the time. And then it had an accumulation. Yeah. It accrued value.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And then I remember like, you know, 10 years ago, a magazine from the UK, I think it was called Empire Magazine, they called it, we want to put you, Chevy, and Marty on the cover. And I said, why? And they said, well, it's the 25th anniversary of Three Amigos. And it's a huge hit. You mean somebody cares? I didn't think anybody even ever thought about it.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Yeah, but the next year they did the cover of 25 Years Later from Ishtar.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Well, the truth is... I enjoy working with Marty and I think it's vice versa. So we actually enjoy it and all that other stuff.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Yeah. There are no pricks allowed. Our max is six, maybe seven shows a month. Okay. So it's not, you know, I couldn't do it because I got a family and I love being home. Yeah.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I thought it was funny. This is in the 70s when I was getting asked for a lot of autographs. And so I made up a card and it said, because I thought, what do people really want when they get an autograph? They want to say that they met you. That's the main thing. And what was he like?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
In, you know, like the 12 seconds that they met you, what was he like? So I wrote, this certifies that you met me and found me warm, charming, intelligent, and funny. And then I had a printed signature on it. And then I found I'd give the cards out thinking it was hilarious. And then they'd say, could you sign this? No way. Yeah. So I thought, well, that's over. Oh, wow.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
We always... Well, in fairness, it's slowly evolving. We never throw everything out and then bring everything new in. It would be impossible. So it just slowly evolves.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Yeah, we change things one line at a time. And then every once in a while we'll come up with a new idea and we'll put it in whole.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
We'll do Zoom and we'll have a bunch of material in front of us. But, you know, we'll do that. at the beginning of a tour, if we have a lot of new material to go over.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And as you know, Marty is an incredible singer. I mean, I listen to him on stage every night. He's never flat. He's never sharp. And curiously, he's never on the note. But, no, he's incredible. He never misses. He has a beautiful tone.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
We don't actually sing and play together. We do some songs, but we use piano and we use our orchestra, but we don't have a banjo number. Jason, have you not seen it?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
The only stand-up I do is in our show. Yeah. You know, I call it stand-up with Marty, but we each have a section in our show, and I just sort of do monologue jokes and introduce a song on the banjo and play it. But I love doing it. And it took me as long, as much time to work out that ten minutes. as it used to take to work out 10 minutes.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
You know, you realize you're three years into this and you've got one little area that's weak and you're trying to fix it. And now it's feeling really good now that it's old and overexposed.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
No. I mean, there's jokes that, you know, for example, when we did our Netflix special, then we really started trying to change things out. And then three years later, we're talking, we're going, you know what? I missed that one joke. Right. Blah, blah, blah. And then we would put it back in and then no one knew.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Which one is your favorite? Which one of the three? How is it to deeply prepare using old material?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I'm not sure what you mean. You mean you feel like you're giving away your private life to do a talk show anecdote?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I have a secret fantasy, which is to go on a talk show totally unprepared and just to see what happens.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Didn't know a thing. Didn't know a thing. You just write it according to the premise.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And then when it started to hit the air and you started to get back word that, by the way, it's the biggest debut that ever and, you know, that sort of thing. I don't know how accurate that is. Yeah, it's huge. And that's when you start to get excited. But you don't change anything because of that. You just, oh. And then even a year and a half later, you start to go, what is this?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Well, that's one of those news stories because we're shooting two days in Los Angeles that it's mistaken for. They're moving to the entire season, you know. No, it's like a location shoot.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
That was my, you know, when I had the idea for the show, I pitched it to them, to the producers, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal, based on, I wasn't even in it. I said, I think this is a good idea. And we liked it. And then they called me and said, would you do it? And I said, well, I can't. I could only do it if it's shot in New York. Right. And then that's what, you know, that's why it was shot.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And also it's a New York show, which makes it kind of great.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
You've had great cast people on that show. So fantastic. Yeah. And that's what, when we get somebody that we can, you know, like, we worked with Matthew Broderick, and it was like so easy, and the comedy is so good. It's like you've worked together all, you know, your whole lives.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
It came about after the fact because I had originally pitched it as three older people who have a lot of time on their hands. And we were busy. And then I think the studio suggested, what about Selena, actually? What about Selena? and we met her on Zoom, and they actually cast her, and we met her on Zoom, and Marty and I, after the Zoom, we call each other and go, she's perfect. Wow.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
You've always been a champion of her. You pull out names from an old hat. Yeah.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
yes morgan neville so glad what's it called it's called steve exclamation point okay yeah steve exclamation point and um it i got a call from morgan neville about this documentary and and i you know his credits are won't you be my neighbor and 20 feet from stardom yeah so many you know he did a thing called cool school yeah and uh And I met him when we got along.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And, you know, when you do a documentary, you have to open up, first of all, your archives, which I happen to have. They told me, they said, you have a lot of archives. And I didn't realize I had a lot of archives. So they went, prowled through my archives for months and months and months and found things. They found. Like an old sock. A photo. Pardon me.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
It was a cherished sock. Anyway, they found a photo of my father in Germany in 1943 doing a USO show. Oh, thank God.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I did not archive. I saved things. And I realized later, you know, I would take things like, oh, I'm on a magazine cover. I'll save it. And I'd throw it in a thing. Yeah. I was saving all the wrong stuff. I should have saved photos, which, you know, photos were hard to come by then. You just didn't snap it. You had to photo this and then, you know, change film, the whole thing.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
So, but when I wrote my autobiography, I did have one little plastic box where I just threw things in and that had things like a receipt. from a hotel in Salt Lake City in 1971. So you knew where you were at that date and you could research. Do you remember her name though? It was like archaeological because as it went down, you would go past time, go through time.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Very good. By the way, you can buy Marty's book on Amazon. I mean, you won't. Right. If you needed it, it's there.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
It's about four months, and I actually love it. You know, the studio's 20 minutes from my house, and also you're working with two other co-stars, and so you're not shooting every day, and when we work together, it's really fun.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I love your show. I love when you're joking around. It just feels like you're with three friends, you know? Not you guys, but...
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And I'll get the address, give you the address for the check.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Steve, hi, everyone. It's too much. First of all, I have to just jump in. You got to go? I got to go. I got to go. I got to jump in and say how great it was to hear you guys try to figure out what 200 was. And the closest thing... It is four times 50, right? The closest thing I can come up with is that you think 200 is 208. And I'm thinking that you ought to contact NASA...
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
Every day I get an email, hey, what about Steve Martin short? And then I'd see it on any, you know, Twitter thing I'm on. What about that?
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
The great thing about Marty is he has it all done at once. Right. The hair, the eyes, the nose, the teeth. It's true. And you heal all at once. You heal six weeks and it's over.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
I have to add a line from your earlier conversation about Kleenex, because Lenny Bruce had a line, it's like the mother, and she goes in her son's room and picks up, she goes, oh, oh look, Sonny blew his nose on the Playboy magazine again.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
First of all, we pay our compliments to Selena. She's lovely to work with. We love Selena. And, you know, she doesn't mind us. Oh, that's Marty. Do you need to get the door? You're such a pro.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
It was friendly as far as I can go. Yeah. You maxed out. But I first met Marty... at my house, and he came over to get a copy of the script for Three Amigos. Really? And that's when I first met him.
SmartLess
"Steve Martin & Martin Short"
And I, of course, knew who he was, and I loved, I, since then, you know, I learned more, because I always enjoyed him, but, you know, I also watched him do specials and create new characters, and I've realized that his characters are so bizarre, they have nothing to do with humanity. They have to do with, like, you know, aliens coming down and saying, hey, I think this is the way they act.

He's playing both sides. Hey, this is Steve in Pittsburgh. My boldest take is that a spoon and a knife are the only utensils that you need. A spoon can do everything that a fork can, but a fork can't do anything that a spoon can. Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.

We have a state that is going actively against the will of the people. Because 57%, which is a pretty good majority of folks, voted for this thing. And yet a woman's right is not protected because it didn't reach the 60% threshold. And DeSantis resorted to all sorts of tricks, censoring certain ads and news stations from covering this. Okay, well, that's a great question because they're deliberately strange about it. Nobody really knows. They don't really reveal their methods. We know that they don't count books that are sold at conventions.

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Yeah. No, the problem for you is you've got to sell them in actual bookstores. I think that's the only way the times count. And I think they kind of underweight like Costco and places like that that move a lot of books. Yeah.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
They order it online. They do measure online sales, but they sort of favor, I think, actual bookstores. Now, I don't know a lot about them. They hide their methods and won't reveal it, so I can't tell you that much insight. You can look at their website and find a bunch of mysterious, opaque language. I don't know. You okay? But I have put together what I think are your top five ways to sell.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Let's start with the five. We can do some outside looking in if I can come up with something.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
No, number five. Hey guys, your show. Hey, number five, I would say sell copies in bulk. You need to be selling copies to like the Stugatz Reading Club, the Stugatz fan group. A lot of conservative authors, they're selling like thousands at a time to big groups of people and that moves the needle.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
I think the Times bestseller was kind of like tries to devalue that, but that's just a way to move a lot of units and if you're not selling in bulk, I don't think you have much of a chance here.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
That's a great question. People have gotten busted doing that, trying to game the New York Times. I wouldn't recommend it. They're not so dumb that they're going to fall for that one.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Again, they're going to be watching that. It's going to be suspicious. It's going to set off the algo. I would say you've got to move them one at a time. But look, if you have a mass mailing list you can reach out to, a bunch of people buy them all at once, nothing wrong with that. But you yourself, they're all going to the same address. They're going to be on to that. Okay, good.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
You guys owe him an apology. OK, number four, be about Donald Trump. The last like since 2016, a ton of books have been about Donald Trump, insider accounts of Donald Trump's, how we ended up with Trump, books about sort of like the rise of fascism that scare everybody.

Number three. Okay, B for old people. Like, young people are on TikTok. They're not reading books. If this is for kids, I mean, there is a kids bestseller list. You could go that way. Oh, I like that. Stugatz for the kids, illustrated edition. But other than that, you need to be hitting, like, a 55-year-old woman who reads a lot of books in a year.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
And unfortunately for you, I don't think you're exactly positioned for that. Don't hit a 55-year-old woman, Stugatz.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Okay, explain why everything's fucked. There's a lot of books on the bestseller list that are about why we're in the predicament we are, like what's going wrong with society. Don't know if you cover that, Stugatz. I don't think this is kind of your channel.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Sadly, women read a lot more than men. I don't know if that'll sound like a shock to you guys, but women are cranking through books and men read like one book a year. So you're on an uphill battle if your target audience is men.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
Well, you got to have a murder in there. Is there a murder in the book? Is it true crime on the nonfiction? Every book on the fiction list has a murder in it. Basically, you're you're in trouble if you don't have a murder.

Hour 1: Reacting To Mack Brown's Firing And Weight Loss (feat. Steve Hely)
I mean, you can see what's happened. I pivoted away from being a book writer to TV because there's no money here, man. You're in a tough racket.

Yeah, Kyle Brandt pointed this out after Jaden Daniels made the conference championship. So here's where team scoring defenses ranked for each of these quarterbacks. Brock Purdy. first. Mark Sanchez, third. Joe Flacco, third. Ben Roethlisberger, first. Sean King, third. Jaden Daniels, 18th. So he's been carrying Washington.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Right. Well, I've always known you, Dan, to put the sharpest possible point on things. So and it does offend my principles. It does offend. More importantly, it offends the principles of The Washington Post. You know, there are the principles of The Washington Post date back to 1935. They're affixed to the wall as you walk into the newsroom of The Washington Post.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
The first principle is to tell the truth as nearly as the truth may be ascertained. And then there's principle number five, which says that, you know, this, you know, that you're supposed to serve the public and not the interests of the individual, of the owner, of the commercial interests of the owner.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
So I worry when it appears that the owner is prioritizing his other commercial interests over the public. over the core principles and the core mission of The Washington Post. And by the way, I mean, the core principle is is articulated quite well in the motto of The Washington Post. But what Bezos himself has called a mission statement, not a motto, which is democracy dies in darkness.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
And that means that this news organization ought to stand up for democracy in every possible way. Most recently, you know, with this decision not to run a wide range of opinions and on its in its opinion pages on in this opinion section digitally, to me is fundamentally undemocratic. You know, the core principle, a fundamental principle of a democracy is free expression.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
And and newspapers like The Post have traditionally honored free expression by allowing a wide range of opinions on their opinion pages and in their opinion section. And to sort of say that really the only opinions that will be allowed here that will be welcomed here are opinions that are that are like mine, I think is fundamentally undemocratic.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
I think there's a simple answer to that, and the answer is yes. Cool.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Yeah, I think you've answered your own question here. Okay.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Is that a slurp? Wow, I'm beginning to feel like I'm back in the newsroom with you, Dan.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
I thought I had left this world.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Well, it was hard to write. I mean, you know, while I was at The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos was a really good owner. He gave us our independence. He supported us. He defended us against Donald Trump, all the threats that he received. of reprisals and all of that, he stood behind us. So it was difficult for me to write now that I've become incredibly, well, more than disappointed.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
I've gone from disappointment to disillusionment to indignation, really, over what's happening there. And so, yeah, it was hard for me to write. And I've been very concerned about the direction of things at The Post. I should say, by the way, Dan, that the news reporting is really good. The news department, as you know, is separate from the opinion department.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Bezos has not interfered at all in the news coverage as far as I can tell. I've heard nothing of the sort. And every day they're producing one scoop after the next and telling the public what it needs to know about their government.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Well, only in the last several weeks where I've been very disappointed. I started commenting just before the election last year when The Washington Post made when Jeff Bezos made the decision to kill an editorial endorsing Kamala Harris for president. They had been endorsing for president consistently since 1976, with only one exception when George Bush and Michael Dukakis were the candidates.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
And so I felt that was the wrong decision. It came only 11 days before the election itself. I think it was a demonstration of fear on basis as part about reprisals from Donald Trump. I described it then in a tweet as as cowardice, as cowardly and spineless. And and, you know, since then, there have been a number of steps that Jeff Bezos has taken that caused me a lot of concern.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Amazon making a million-dollar donation to the inauguration, Bezos making a pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago at that dinner, having conversation with Melania Trump about this supposed documentary that would be made about her life, for which she herself would be the executive producer. Amazon, two weeks later, paying $40 million for the rights to that so-called documentary.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
three times the amount of the next highest bidder, Bezos appearing on the dais during the inauguration as if he were a trophy for Donald Trump, along with all the other tech executives, subsequently making a decision that the opinion pages
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
would only include opinions that were consistent with his own, as he described it, as personal liberties and free markets, essentially a libertarian philosophy, it sounds like, although he did not explain it in any detail whatsoever. And so it's been one thing after the next, and I've been very concerned about it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
In fact, Amazon most recently reached an agreement to purchase the rights to Donald Trump's old TV show called The Apprentice, And I'm sure that undoubtedly Donald Trump will be receiving a portion of that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Fear, I think. You know, I can't get into his head, but I think that's really what's happened is that, you know, Trump during the campaign said that he would be people's retribution. He talked about seeking vengeance on his perceived political enemies. Bezos had always been seen as perceived as a political enemy for one reason, one reason only.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
and that was the coverage on the editorials of the washington post and so um i think he was concerned that with if trump got back into power uh that he would deny amazon uh contracts that it has with the federal government it has a enormous number of contracts with the federal government particularly for cloud computing services and also his commercial space venture blue origin was really at an inflection point as you know a couple of weeks ago it
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
It launched its finally successfully launched a rocket into space, and it was hoping to be in a position of competing directly with SpaceX. Well, SpaceX is owned by Elon Musk. Elon Musk certainly after the election was practically was camped out at Mar-a-Lago. and now is camped out at the White House basically and has more power in this government than probably anybody but Donald Trump himself.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
So I think it's fear that he would that it would it would have a very damaging impact on Amazon's business and the business of Blue Origin, both of which depend to a large degree on the contracts with the federal government.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
I'm not always serious. You know, that movie has left me with a reputation as being someone who has no sense of humor whatsoever. So I've been working diligently since then to try to... That's a weird one for them. And, you know, you're not helping here by saying that. In any event, look, I was very happy with the movie.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
First of all, I got to be portrayed by someone who is an excellent actor, but also is taller, more fit and better looking than I am. So that when people hear my name, they think of him and I'm totally fine with that. So but I think more importantly than that, I think it was a very I think it was a great movie.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
it sent a really important message i think about the need to have investigative reporting about how hard it is to do investigative reporting correctly about the the need for news organizations to commit themselves to doing this kind of work and that the public really uh values that on uh on our part and also i think a very important message that it's it's um that it's important for the press and everyone really in our society to listen to people who don't have power
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
because they often have very powerful things to say. And we finally gave voice to the survivors of abuse who had been victimized by clergy and whose those cases had been covered up for decades by the church. And finally, they were able to achieve accountability because of the work of the Boston Globe.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
Yeah, well, that's a good question. I think, well, obviously, we'll have to wait and see. I think that my sense is that it is a survival technique, that he is trying to navigate a really difficult situation. I mean, of course, you know, he's still executive chairman of Amazon. He does have a fiduciary responsibility to that publicly owned, publicly traded company.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
He also wants to see Blue Origin get off the ground, literally and and figuratively. And And so he wants to stay. I believe he wants to stay out of Trump's crosshairs. I don't think this makes him necessarily an ally of Donald Trump, really. I don't put him in that category, but I think he wants to stay. He wants to not antagonize him. Basically, don't poke the bear.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
And I think that was evident with the decision not to run the editorial endorsement last year, last November. Don't poke the bear. Why antagonize them if it's not really necessary and it's not required for a news organization to run an editorial endorsement anyway? So he rationalized that decision. I don't think, you know, the idea of independence was really the reason for the editorial.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
They'd run an editorial of endorsing. Well, they endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016. They endorsed Joe Biden in 2020. Those editorials were sharply critical of Donald Trump. Bezos didn't object to those editorials. He knew that they were coming. He praised the editorial page editor at the time profusely. And but now I think he just doesn't want to poke the bear.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
He doesn't want to antagonize Donald Trump. He's looking for ways to stay on his good side. And so, yeah, I would put it in the category of a survival technique. The problem is the survival technique is doing damage to the reputation of The Washington Post. It's undermining its credibility. It makes it appear that it's not independent.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Ahoy, It's Captain Slappy! (feat. Martin Baron)
It's causing hundreds of thousands of subscribers to abandon their subscriptions. And that's, I think, deeply concerning. My worry is that he's prioritizing his other business interests over the business interests of the Washington Post and, more importantly, the principles of the Washington Post.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

Yeah, I was a fanatical rugby player. I'm from New Zealand and rugby's our national sport. Everyone, when they're a kid growing up here, wants to be an all-black and I was no different to that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
No, I think I might have lost a couple of teeth before it was mandatory to wear a mouth guard. But no, nothing too serious. I played rugby through my early college days and then obviously started caddying at a young age. But yeah, rugby's a big game here in New Zealand. I'm not sure if you know much about it. Oh, yeah.

Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Oh, look, I mean, anybody that's good enough to get their PGA Tour card and play on any kind of professional circuit, for every player that's out there playing, trying to make a living at golf, there's hundreds of other players that don't make it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
It's a very competitive game, and to be at an elite level in golf, I don't think the average person would realize how much a player puts in and how much time goes into. Making it on the turf. Let me rephrase it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Oh, look, I guess me and Phil Mickelson could probably square off one day.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Yeah, that's a great question. My personal belief is that he won't give up the dream of trying to win another major championship until the time comes when he knows it's not a possibility. So for him, in order for him to...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
play in a major championship and be competitive he needs to have his body in us you know allow his body to be healed and to the point where he can practice so when he stands on the first tee of a major championship he knows he's fully fit and he can play 72 holes without any without any ailment uh and then he can compete so
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Tiger is an incredible competitor and I think he's proud of all the records he's got. I think one record he'd like to add to is winning a major championship at 50 years and older. Phil Mickelson's proven that you can do that and there's been a number of other players of the won majors late in their career. So, you know, Tiger's, I don't think he's given up the dream of doing that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
And, you know, until such point where that dream's gone, where he believes he can't compete and win a major championship, I think he'll try and keep playing. So hopefully we haven't seen the last of Tiger. I mean, it would be a phenomenal story if he could come back and get himself ready where he could play in a major championship and not only play, but, you know, give it a chance to win.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
When I went to work with Tiger, I considered myself to be reasonably fit and he gave me a whole different perspective for what being fit was. So yeah, I got it. He put me through some rigorous workouts and sometimes I had to say, look, I'm done now, Tiger. I'll meet you in the car when you're finished. He's a pretty strong dude.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Look, when you've caddied for as long as I've caddied, I guess it's just kind of ingrained in you. Basically, I started as a kid at my local golf course here in New Zealand, sort of eight or nine years old, caddying every single weekend, 36 holes a day to the point where, and then I caddied for 40 plus years on the tour. So,
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
is something that you'll always be inclined to view things from a carry's perspective, not from a player's perspective, I guess.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Yeah, possibly, yeah.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Well, I think you'd have to say it's a zero because I've never used an Uber. That is a private car.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
I drive myself everywhere. I haven't had the pleasure of having to use an Uber yet. And if I have used one, my wife would have booked it for me because I don't carry apps on my phone. So I'm a bit old school.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Well, we only really had one heated exchange and it was at Augusta in 2003. Tiger got to the third hole at Augusta. The tee was positioned at the front of the tee, which made it possible where you could drive the green. And I'd been out in the course earlier that morning and
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
told them on the practice fairway that they'd moved the tee up on the third hole so sometimes the third hole was an iron off the tee to keep it short of the bunkers and sometimes you hit a driver to get over the bunkers depending on where the wind is and where the hole location is but on this particular day the tee was moved up so the bunkers were in play there's no doubt in my mind it was a driver he didn't like the play I couldn't see why he didn't like the play I talked him into it he hit an absolute shit shot
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
And fanned way out to the right and eventually made a bogey on a hole that, you know, you should make three, four at the worst. And that possibly, you know, stopped the momentum that he had after starting with 4-4 and, you know, didn't do any good in the tournament in the end. And he carried on like an absolute pork chop for the next few holes. You know, like a little sour baby, whatever.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
And then on the ninth hole, I just actually let it rip. It's the first time I've done that since I started with him. Just gave him an absolute mouthful and a bollocking about his behavior and the way he was carrying on and that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
that was all good and then um yeah when we completed the round he um said hey thanks very much for the pep talk up nine and everything so yeah but like we got on like a house on fire when i was working from i think that was the only time that we ever had any kind of you know really heated argument it was unfortunate it was during the round of a major championship but
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
When I came up the 18th hole, I thought, well, this might be the last time I'm going to Tiger. He either liked it or what I said, or he absolutely hated what I said. So, yeah, he was very good about it. So we laughed about that for a little bit.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Just basically not afraid to voice your opinion, you know, straight up sort of bloke and that. And, you know, when there's something, a lot on the line, not scared to voice your opinion and, you know, try and sway a player your way or, you know, whatever it might be.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
But just basically, you know, I think you'll find the common trait amongst all the best carriers are guys that are prepared to stand up and not be afraid to be wrong. Obviously, when it comes down to the crux of major championships and golf tournaments and that, and there's a lot on the line,
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
it's very easy just to be what we call a yes man and just agree with the player because some guys are afraid to be wrong, but you can't ever be afraid to be wrong. If you can speak up and voice your opinion, you're going to be successful.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
No, you don't call out your workmates, that's for sure.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Domonique Ruins The Interview (feat. Steve Williams)
Well, I mean, I think that's a staggering statement to make. I mean, look, if a player won three major championships in no other tournaments and a player won one major championship in 20 tournaments, the guy that's won three major championships gets a nod in everybody's book. So I don't know what he was basing that on. But, you know, I guess it's above a comment. Some guys... Thank you very much.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

we got here, I want to tell you a story. I'm serious here. My wife and my two daughters, they begged me to buy a Peloton. So I bought a Peloton and then I watched that Peloton sit in my office and stare at me. So you know what I did one day? I looked at it. And so I decided to get off my ass and I jumped on the Peloton because no one else was using it and I paid for it. I mean, so why not?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: Paul Maurice Stories With Adnan Virk
Then I realized eventually that they bought it for me. And I got to tell you, way more challenging than I could have ever imagined. Peloton coaches are walking the walk. I love the coaches. I do the Grateful Dead one. It's fantastic. They have a sub three hour marathon runner, military trained athlete, a former college basketball player, and so many other well-rounded coaches on their team.

The Hockey Show: Paul Maurice Stories With Adnan Virk
All this experience really shows in their classes, which are never short of challenging, especially for me. So I jumped on it that first time. It was challenging, more challenging than I thought. Then I wanted to beat the bike, and so I kept jumping on it, and I absolutely love it. I mean, I'm the only one who uses it, but again, they got it for me. I mean, I had no idea.

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
He played such a massive role in the Game 2 win to get them back even in the series, but he had a big shot block at the end of the game to make sure Carolina couldn't get back and score the tying goal before the empty netter. So again, he's feared. Carolina doesn't have anybody like that.

The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Und jedes Mal, wenn ich das auf Twitter oder X veröffentliche, wenn Leute sagen, Every single GM in the league would want to have him on their team.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
But you hate him when you play against him and you love to have him in Washington if you're a Caps fan. He's a great player as far as I'm concerned. I was shocked he was not on Four Nations to begin with.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
They played pretty well in game number two as well. So, no, I'm not saying Florida's out of it. The heart of a champion, the defending Stanley Cup champs. They've got all the key quality pieces. I think they're being hurt by Matthew Kachuk, though. He's clearly not himself. He's a dynamic, fantastic player.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Just looks like he's not 100%. It's his skating or whatever it is. He can't get to the loose pucks he normally gets to.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
And so, you know, look, him at 70 is better than anybody else. I get that. But you're counting on him and maybe a couple extra days before the home game. They'll be able to get him ready to go and more like his actual self. And Florida will be fine, too. Bobrovsky has not been great. I'm sure he'll come up with a top-notch performance in Game 3.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
So a couple of things, you know, the veteran veteran moves. And so, you know, I guess the official can be right on both things.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
You can have an illegal hit. It was a charge or whatever it was. And also and also embellished. Both things can happen. Although I'd like to see it the other way. Right. If it's either a trip or an embellishment, it can't be both.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
I'd like to see it that way. But that's not the way the officials call it. And so that's their way of evening things up, if you will.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Yeah, when they tend to let normally let things go, right? Again, it looked dangerous. At first glance, I thought it looked dangerous up against the side wall there in the neutral zone. And listen, I can't speak for the officials, right? They've got a crazy difficult job.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
They're under heat again for what happened last night with Arvidsson and McNabb that might have decided the Vegas-Edmonton game last night. So...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Alright, so I'm glad you asked that. My pick before the playoffs started was going to be the Dallas Stars. I love Dallas. I expect them to get Miro Haskin back and Jason Robertson back. They've just gotten Robertson back, but they both missed the first round. And so... Ich bin wirklich auf mich selbst wütend. Ich wurde aber auch ein Arschloch.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Pod Colson schießt, Walner schießt letzten Abend. Also jetzt, wenn sie jetzt, weißt du, Great goaltending for their backup goalie and fourth line scoring as well. Then, you know, write it down now. The Oilers are going to at least get to the Cup. It's been a wild playoff so far.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Man weiß nichts.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
You know, the Jets are 1.8 seconds away from blowing everything up. I mean, GM fired, coach fired, president fired, players traded, players cut, moved out. Everybody get out of town. Families pulled out of houses, schools moved, divorces, you know, like engagements over, like... Wir verkaufen das Team.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)

Listen, he's just one of my favorite people on the planet. And, you know, we're all in the same sort of... I get emotional just talking about it. We're all in the same business. And, you know, when you start out in a place, in a workplace, it's your business. And then you have colleagues. And then with any luck, those colleagues become friends.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)

The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)

Yeah, that's a fabulous one. I told a story the other day. That's the most expensive This Is Sports Center in history. Think about that. We had to build, in essence, that copy room. We had to build that on the basketball court because we couldn't actually have them go through the ceiling in the real building, right? It doesn't really work that way, right?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
And great assistance by the second actor, Semyon Varlamov, the basketballer. Ovi? Oh mein Gott. Wir hatten einen exacten Ovi-Size, Form, Schulter, volle Pads, die Pants, Schengard, Skates, Equipment.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Nr. 3, Albert Pujols, Talking to the Copy Machine.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)

I'm done with my segment.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
So listen, this was a company called Wieden & Kennedy, right? And they produced all of these. And listen, I can only speak for myself, I don't speak for my colleagues, but I'm not that funny, like I'm not that clever, you know? And so they wrote these things for us.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
And the secret to them, right, at SportsCenter was all about, wow, oh, what a play, crash, bang, boom, he runs into the wall, gone, a whole run, what a slam. Richtig, richtig.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Und also Reston Palmer.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Hey, du kannst meinen Klienten nicht sehen. Ich will Ausdruck.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Ja, okay, so he's come back. Apparently they have done everything they've had to do. um es zumindest bei der Nationalen Hockey League richtig zu machen.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
Und dann hat es zu einem Punkt, weißt du, Quenville has been rumored to be in the mix for jobs and all those things. But the commissioner kept saying the time wasn't right. Time wasn't right. And for whatever reason, Gary Bettman and the NHL has decided the time is right now.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
And listen, the Anaheim Ducks, they've made that decision that they're okay with this. I saw the press conference yesterday. Joel Quenville appeared to say all the right things off a prepared statement.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Hockey Show: The Panthers Are Up Against It (feat. Steve Levy)
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
A little bit fried. And tell Greg that Messier hates him, too. Add him to the list, okay?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
So first of all, I got to be honest, the NHL set up a charter, which was a big, big win. This is my 30th Stanley Cup final. And the first time we've had access to a charter. So a bunch of ESPN people, Hockey Night in Canada people, Sportsnet. So it was nonstop. Fort Lauderdale to Edmonton.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
smooth customs easy so really no complaints on the travel we might have had easier than the players did in fact the Oilers I know when they went home from Fort Lauderdale they had a stop in Kansas City for fuel if you can believe that on the Oilers plane that's true story so Outside of South Florida? Yeah, I do.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
I believe it's special when a team finally wins its first Stanley Cup in franchise history. This is a hard-working, blue-collar, gritty club. The Panthers are. And so, yeah, I think they have a lot of fans. Not in Canada, probably, but certainly in the U.S.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Well, in the summer, man, I'm not picking Florida. And quite frankly, walking around Edmonton with Messier is pretty cool. We didn't wait in too many lines.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Oh, do I have to bring PK? Can I just go alone? No. Hey, we had a great time at Edmonton. We had a blast. It's a small town slash city, but we had a great time. The people were really nice, really welcoming. And listen, if you love hockey, you'd love Edmonton too. I just, I can't take the heat, man. I bubble up here in Florida in the summer, so...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Although I do go to Vegas in the summer, so that's kind of something.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
So that's not true, but I appreciate you pointing that out. The desk that everyone was complaining about was only in Edmonton for the three games there. We couldn't get our proper desk through customs. No, it was the difference in the setup that we had. So here at the Amerit Bank Arena, which I still can't get used to saying, they gave us a great suite. We were in our own suite.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Therefore, we had the desk. You could see we were standing behind it, lit up perfectly. And in Edmonton, we were not afforded that luxury of having a suite. We sort of had an area, if you will, which was like really right in the middle of the crowd and a ceiling right above us. So we couldn't stand. So we had to sit in chairs. Therefore, we had to get a different table.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
This is way too inside the television world.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
No, and I even mentioned it. I say I'm taking the desk home with me at the end. People don't like it, but as one of our bosses said, listen, it's a good thing. Nobody's complaining about our content or what we're saying or ripping our views or point of views. They're ripping the desk, so we seem to be okay with that, you know?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
I mean, he was a central figure in this whole thing for me. And I said it last night in the pregame. You know, if you didn't care who won, you didn't have a really rooting interest. Paul Maurice is a guy you root for. He's a lifer. He had more losses than any coach in NHL history. Fired a bunch of times. He's had a rough road.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
And if this would have gone the other way last night, you know, and this is kind of a coin flip. It's a one-goal game. This could have easily gone the other way. And if it had... You know, he would have been tagged with that label of the guy who can't win the big one. So I think you saw on the ice what it meant to him. He was talking to Emily. He needed a break with the cup.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
And he looked at the sky and closed his eyes. I thought that was really real. And so I'm a Maurice guy. I remember him back in Hartford. He was the youngest coach in the NHL at that point of the Whalers. And Ray Ferraro is in that picture to the left. Ray said he's going to frame that. But he was a guy I was rooting for, maybe more so than any player.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Tyler Pozo is a great story, too, those kinds of things. But I really feel like Maurice earned this. And, yes, I think the Panthers are a likable club. Who doesn't like Matthew Kachuk unless you've got to play against him, and I get that. But Barkov, the way he carries himself, really all the guys, even Lomborg and Cousins and those guys, I could get behind.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
This could be my favorite team if I was a kid growing up watching this club. So I think likability off the charts, and I'm so happy for Paul Maurice right at the top of my list.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
So interesting emotions there. So, look, he's all in on the Oilers, and how could he not be, right? He's actually born and raised in it, let alone being the man there. Regrets. But then in the end, so the Oilers leave the ice, and I'm watching mess, and it's only our third year together, our second cup. He got misty-eyed. Like, he gets in the moment of whoever is winning the cup,
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
I think because he remembers how hard it is to do from his six Stanley Cups. And he was talking about the tentacles, in essence, of all the different people on the ice from your billet family the trainers, the equipment guys, the support staff who work so hard, especially in hockey, for not a lot of glory and probably not a lot of money. And you see the families on the ice and what it means.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
And Bill Zito, the GM, so emotional on so many occasions. And so Mess gets like teary-eyed. Mess is a really fascinating guy. He's a really thoughtful, introspective guy. Like, he would put his stick through your teeth to win a hockey game when he played. But now in his post-playing career, he's so thoughtful. I think he's an emotional guy as well. And I think he was reliving it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
He did it two years ago, too, when Tampa Bay won as well. And so it's interesting to sort of go through a Stanley Cup final win with Mark Messier, who's won six of them. So he knows.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Yeah, no, it's all time. We opened the show last night saying this. You could make the argument this is the most significant single game in National Hockey League history. That's like a thing that's hyperbole, but not necessarily when you break it down that, you know, Florida had never won. Canada hadn't won in 31 years. The Oilers hadn't won in 34 years.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Yes, you could complete the comeback for Florida and not carry around that label as the biggest choke job ever. I mean, I mentioned Maurice, but every player on that Panther squad would wear that. And now they don't have to. And Edmonton can walk away with their heads held high in that they battled back from down 3-0 and could have just given up and been swept out. So this was my 30th Stanley Cup.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
I just talked to Barry Melrose, who I missed dearly. The first 28 were with Barry. He's often tired and doing his thing. And and so I've never seen anything like this. I'd like to think I have a feel for these series. But really, after the third game, I thought this was sweep city. And I picked Florida in every game, five, six and seven to win. I couldn't believe they didn't win in five and six.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
And so here we go, and they get it done last night. And that was the game they needed, guys. We didn't have a one-goal game in the whole series. That never happens in the Stanley Cup final. So that's another rarity prior to last night. And, you know, Panthers hockey is winning 2-1, which was exactly the recipe for last night.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
No, I don't golf really. I just perspire. I get warm. It's really warm. I'm in the lobby of the hotel. Of course, the air conditioning is not working.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
You mean last night or right now?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
I get all the Botox stuff, too, and come on. You guys know me a little bit. I'm the last guy to do any of that stuff. Come on. And so, yeah, I just I perspire. I get I overheat. Chris Berman is the only guy who likes the studio colder than I like it. And it makes it makes everybody else nuts. Even Messi, the tough guy from Alberta. He complains the studio is too cold when I'm in there with him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: Mark Messier Hates Greg Cote
Like, you're Mark Messi from Alberta. How can it be too cold for you? So it's just a thing. It's my thing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

You're not talking broadcasters.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Dave Dwork. Oh, wow. That's the guy. Doing twerk. Then there's some dude I see eating the chicken fingers and the free food in the press box. I think his name is Roy. He might be part of it. Sorry, that's Wah. Wow. It's that guy. It's that guy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Wah Bellamy. Thank you, Goldie. I appreciate you. All right, boys. See you. Thank you, Goldie. See you, guys. I love that, man.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Everybody knows Jeremy Taché. So those are the important things. We can get to the hockey in a second. Hey, Goldie, love you too. Yeah, of course, of course. It's amazing is what's going on with the Panthers. We are really in.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
you know a golden age and in south florida if you look back at the early 70s dolphins the big three for the heat that stretch that they had um that's really the only comparable you know the hurricanes late 80s early 90s with all those championships this panther run that started a few years ago and still the window is wide open for the next few years including the next few weeks um
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Sure.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
What?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
They're just a machine. They could beat you however you want. You want to open it up and score goals. They can do that. You want to grind it out one, nothing and have a tight game right to the end. They do not change the way they play. They know their identity and they got a lot of guys that buy in. Basically everybody buys in and they're even willing to sacrifice their own game to get wins.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
And then obviously we all know that's what it takes to win in sports.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Right.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Well, Roy, you know you're at Amarant Bank Arena all the time, so you watched the Panthers play the last couple of months. Now, you knew Matthew Kachuk was out. Marshan was out for those three weeks in March. Then he just started coming back, getting his game going. Ekblad was out of the lineup. You know, you don't take all those guys out of the lineup and have you be exactly the same.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Then Bennett missed a few games. Hulikov missed a few games. So the Panthers were kind of maybe not intentionally, but they were playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers. And that wasn't the team we knew we were going to see when the lights went on in the Stanley Cup playoffs. They get to game one against Tampa Bay.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Matthew Kachuk had never played a game with Seth Jones and Brad Marchand, like ever. So it It was just a different team. And you had Paul Maurice kind of spreading out that ice time because you can't do what they've done. 209 games the last couple of years. Best four checking team in the league. Intense physical hockey.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
You physically cannot do that for 82 games and have enough left in the tank for a couple of months. And I just think, as you mentioned, the media, a lot of people just bought into it and said, well, the Panthers aren't quite that good, but they didn't look underlying. Without the reasons the last six weeks, they weren't quite playing at their optimal level.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Obviously, everybody's swinging a miss on picking Tampa Bay, and it's amazing the series wasn't even close. I'm looking at you, Bob, with shoes and lightning and seven.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
know i've been wrestling with that stew you know yeah you can it's amazing because you win a championship how can you be better right until you actually win the championship again yeah but when you look at brad marshan on a third line this guy's future hall of famer those two young fins they're all of a sudden scoring goals like sam reinhardt is because of brad marshan and then you look at the defense
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
where you took Ekblad out of the lineup and you really never missed a beat, you really can make the case that overall they're a better team. Plus, you have another year of experience. So if they get to a game seven, which by the way, through the Eastern Conference playoffs the last two years, they never do. They beat everybody in five or six.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
But if it does come down to it, let's say against Toronto, and there's a game seven coming up in two weeks, they know what it takes to win a game seven because they've already been there and done that. So on a lot of levels, yes, you can make that case that they're better than they were a year ago.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Cody, what scares me about Toronto is eating the shawarma in the street off one of those carts. Dangerous. You know, by Union Station. I'm not sure I'm going to go there. As far as the hockey... Look, they've gotten a more tighter defensive system with Craig Berube. It's very ironic. Anthony Stolarz, who was the Panthers' backup last year, will be the goaltender against Bobrovsky.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
But overall, to me, seven-game series, all things being equal, I don't think Toronto can grind it out four times to beat the Panthers. So of course, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, the terrific offense that they had, but the Panthers have proven time and time again, the last two years, they can shut down the offense. As Roy said, you know, Tampa Bay tries this run and gun.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
It doesn't work in the playoffs and it doesn't work against the Florida Panthers defense. So you never want to get too cocky, but Not a huge, scary team to me, but they have adjusted a little bit. You saw the game last night. They're trying to play more like the Panthers, where, hey, 2-1 in the third period, we're comfortable.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
But the area I look at, the Panthers are the best floor-checking team in the NHL, and even against the Ottawa Senators, Toronto is in the bottom third of playoff teams defensively at giving up floor-check chances defensively.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So I think the Panthers can outlast them, and I think it's great they're starting on the road because if they go in there and they get one of the first two games, I think they're in good shape.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Dangerous, Goldie. Parade of Bass Bags. You know, maybe Tashay's right. Let's go Leafs in seven. Okay, that'll be the prediction. Thank you, Goldie. Make everybody feel better. Then when the cats go in there and kick him in the teeth, we can all rip Tashay. Thank you very much.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
First of all, you know, they lost some chatty guys, you know, some guys like cousins in Lombard that brought a little of that juice to the table. So maybe it was a little more of a serious team. He brings all of that and more. He does not shut up. It's great. And it's always positive. So when you get the positive guy on the bench and he's going to the hall of fame, It's a great situation.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
The other thing is he's slotted in with those two young Finns. It might be the best third line since the 1970s Montreal Canadiens that won the four in a row. I don't even know who was on that Canadiens team, but that sounds impressive. You know, is he just look up Google Yvonne Porn YA and get back to me. Okay, brother, just, you know, look that up.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So you look at the matchup that they're on a third line. So like in the Tampa series, right? You can let Barkov and Ryan Harden, they take care of point Kucharov, Gensel. They kind of cancel each other out. Then the Bennett line, you know, in this series, go up against Tavares. They'll probably cancel each other out. Then you go to that third line and you got Brad Marchand there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
He's the most talented guy of anybody. And he also makes those two young Finns, Londell and Losterine, and think offensively a little bit more, like get to the net and I'll get you the puck. So Marchand has been amazing. I didn't know his hands were quite that good. And I didn't know he was quite as fast as he is right now. I think that layoff really helped him at his age in the mid-30s.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So in every way, the guy has been fantastic. And you know what I love about Kachuk and Bennett and Marchand and these guys? The reputation of being the physicality and after... These guys have cut all of that out. They're just playing hockey. And the other team maybe has that in their mind that, hey, these guys might bring some of that to the table. And they're really not. So Marchand is fitting.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So Bill Zito does, and that staff does an amazing job. Here's what we need. Here's the piece we need. Let's go out and fill that hole. And Marchand's been a big part of it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Why, Cody, are you worried he's going to lick you or something? I'm not one of them. This is not me. I love Marshawn. I know. I just wanted to bring up Marshawn licking you. That really didn't matter in the context. You know, Stu Gatz loves that. So I just wanted to bring it up. Thank you, guys. You know, it's the same thing. Go back, you know, to the Yankees, right?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
They win World Series with Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Wade Boggs, Roger, with a bunch of Mets and Red Sox. Once the guy gets to your team, and by the way, he is a great guy, even just walking by him, you know, and what I do always says, hi, terrific guy, funny as heck. That's the way it is in sports.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
You can say that, and maybe I won't, but I don't disagree with you. Yeah, just suck it up and try to get another ring.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
He has not yet, and I'm very disappointed still. I mean, there's no love there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
There you go. Okay. So that's when Tampa was winning those cups. Yes, they had Barkley Goodrell, Blake Coleman on the wings, Gianni Gord in the middle. They were great. No one could match up with them. I think these guys are more Lundell has got a ton of talent. So similar. And by the way, the lightning one, two cups with, with back to back with that line.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So there's the similarity, I guess you could say, but make no mistake. Brad Marshan is a more talented player than all of those guys.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
You know, Roy, I think a lot of these players, the depth players, and we even saw this last year with Opozo and Lomberg and Cousins, you know, I think a lot of them are interchangeable as long as they're healthy. And you've got that top nine.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
And I keep Evan Rodriguez in there, who, by the way, with all the stars, he's the one that led the Panthers in scoring in the Stanley Cup final against the Edmonton Oilers. People kind of forget that. So you look at that top nine that they have. It's loaded. We all know what happens in the playoffs. We've already seen it. You get injuries. You get suspensions. You need 15, 16 forwards.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So the fact that they have that, to me, is great. I'm sure at some point Sam Miskevich gets back in. You know, the thing with Mackey, as a young player, and you know, Roy, you're at the games, he's got that speed, he's got that offensive ability. He's not really a fourth-line guy. So if you're going to play him, I think you need to play him up in the lineup.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
And Rodriguez has been so good right now with Bennett and Kachuk, and Barshan's on that line with Wondell that... It's a great thing to have. But I would think if they go on this run and they go far in the playoffs again, yeah, at some point, you know, a Boquist could pop up a nice time. Mackie Samaskevich gets back in there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
But to your point, you got guys that scored double digits in goals during the regular season. And you need that depth to get all the way through. And we've realized that over the years. So right now, you know, for those guys, it is what it is in the lineup.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Twice, that's right. And he has one more game. He'll sit out game one in Toronto Ekblad. Seth Jones is another reason why Bill Zito and that Panther staff, they do it as well as anybody in all of sports. They see a guy that they know very well, because remember, Zito was in Columbus when Seth Jones was there. One of the Panthers front office guys is Paul Fenton.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Izzy, forget about the hockey. I want to talk all about that pick-up game.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
He was in Nashville when they drafted Seth Jones. They've got a huge book on this guy. He's in a bad situation in Toronto, in Chicago. He's on a bad team. Just call it what it is. If he comes here, here's where we slot him in. Here's the way we play defense. So big, long reach, rangy defenseman that can skate is exactly what fits in Paul Maurice's system. Let's go get him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Because despite what he's doing over there, that's not who he is. You can go to Forsling, you can go to Mikula, you can go to Jones, Verhage, Reinhardt, Bennett, on and on the list goes. They recognize these guys, they bring them in and Jones has been just fantastic. And to me, they got them for five more years at $7 million a year, it's a bargain.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
So do I. Okay. I got Sandman across the board tomorrow in the Derby. And the funniest thing is I was over in Tampa. Panthers took him out in five. I saw Nikita Kucherov, and he asks me, do you know who Jeremy Taché is? What?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The Land of No Expectations (feat. Steve Goldstein)
Oh, my goodness. That is, I got to think about this. Mike Russo. Wow. And current George Richards is still around. I'll throw him in there.
