Residents of many nationalities staying at the IPAS centre in the hotel joined locals, including members of the Men's Shed and the arts group Glugger, to plant vegetables in eight raised beds which form the newly created community garden.
Some of the volunteers gathered recently to prepare the raised beds and Lorna Siggins joined them, where she first spoke to Frank and his daughter Rejoice from Nigeria.
It's great to be able to have somewhere you can grow things then, isn't it?
Do you have cooking facilities?
And we do a lot of voluntary work, you know, around the area.
If we're asked to do something, we try our best to show up and help.
Andrew here, he asked us if we were free to help.
And it was kind of late to be putting stuff in, but they got all the timber and most of the stuff was recycled and we got the plants as well organised.
Great to see you set up the raised beds then.
That's right, we had to construct these with the help from the lads and there was a couple of carpenters there who knew what they were doing.
Yes, and it's waste material.
So recycled pallets then.
I suggested today now maybe we could get somebody to teach us how to cook something.
We have a lot of leaks left and if there's any recipes.
There are different cultures staying in the hotel.
And then we have a farmer here from Bangladesh.
