The other thing that people suffered over there was the constant treachery of love and friendship.
And when the secret police archives were uncovered, they found that everyone had been informing on everyone else.
So what did that do to his view of love then, Cara?
Did he even believe in love?
He said he didn't.
He said, I do not believe in love.
I have seen too much pain.
And because nobody could trust anybody else, like you loved somebody only to be betrayed by them, that meant what was left, a bitterness, a lack of trust.
He exhibited love in everything he did in the way he lived.
He restored buildings in Prague, old buildings.
That was his job.
And he was just wonderful at it.
But he could not trust, ultimately.
He'd just, he'd been, I think, burnt too much, seen too much.
But you were in love with him.
And to hear him say he didn't believe that love was real...
Did that kind of dishonour your feelings in your mind?
I mean, how do you feel when he says something like that to you in regards to what you're feeling in that moment?
Well, it was terrible.
He would say, love is for nothing.
