I think you have this wrong.
I don't think it's about protecting the quarterback at all.
I think it's about protecting yourself in the draft from looking desperate in other teams or showing your cards to other teams to trade up.
The Giants last year, for how lucky they got, there was no guarantee they were getting Jackson Dart.
The Saints could have sat there ahead of them and took Jackson Dart.

Because when you're not using your first selection, like the Jets aren't going to do on Ty Simpson, there's no guarantee Ty Simpson is there at 16.

I'd trust Paul O'Neill more than Shohei Otani.
