And this is how I was taught, even on the RC-135. Essential elements of information, metadata, the critical information, the things that you need to know about. The stuff that's routine, you just keep track of that. It's only when it turns to something other than routine that you care.

That's kind of the signal to noise ratio. When it rises above a certain level, you then say you notice it, but you can't notice everything. I can't always look at every straw in the haystack, can I? I need to know, though, if one of the straws turns. How do I know that? Well, I have to know when it turns. Or it catches on fire, okay? I got to know about that.
