A republic is proclaimed.
The pro-Carthage faction triumphs and it opens negotiations with Hannibal and it starts to launch raids on Roman-held territory in Sicily.
And this, Dominic, proves to be, for Syracuse, an absolutely calamitous mistake.
Hieron had been right.
