I think it was a very fruitful start for a writer, but of course on Aruba I was a bit, in my class I was the only white boy, and here in the Dutch province it was very rural, near to the German border.

That's where we lived.

There I was and my Papiamento was better than my Dutch.

So here again I was a stranger.

The idea of being a stranger, the newcomer, is very familiar to me.

I don't want to know too much about my sources.

I don't want to think too much about what makes my literature tick.

But the fate of the newcomer is something which always reappears in my books.
