So one might consider this to be a technical win for the British, having held off a larger army.

but also a strategical win for Germany, because eventually they kind of pushed in on the front and gained territory.

So you can kind of see it both ways, depending on your lens.

Now, because of this, right, the Germans losing more than the British, the day goes on and the Germans continue to deploy more troops into the fight because they have, I guess, the headcount essentially.

But when it became clear that their odds were turning,

Now talking about the British.

General Sir John French ordered his men to retreat.

And even as they were retreating, there is documentation, he has written about this himself, the men continued to fight hard.

In later memoirs, actually, General French notes that the men seemed to embody what he called a superhuman endurance.

And this is where my ridiculous comparison was going to come in.

But you already cracked in the Return of the King.

I was going a little different.

I was like, you know, this small army going up against a greater army reminds me of the army of the West marching on the Black Gates of Mordor.

You got 6,000 men facing the full force of Sauron's army of like 80,000 or something like that.

So, I mean, if you've seen those movies now, picture that 6,000 to 80,000.

We're talking over here, 80,000 to a million.

So it's like 10 times that scale, but still proportionately.

Oh, my God.

Yes, it's a bit ridiculous, but you look at the Lord of the Rings kind of metaphor and you can kind of understand the bravery and superhuman endurance necessary because you're in the thick of it.

You know, your colleagues, you might have lost some close members like friends also in the army.
