It's starting to cross into the realm of like zombies.
But yeah, I can definitely see why they were like, let's make this a World War Two Russian top secret program about a mysterious gasp.

Their surviving three test subjects were heavily restrained and moved to the medical facility, the two with intact vocal cords continuously begging for the gas, demanding to be kept awake.
