Unfortunately, two hospitals were hit and there were strikes on ordinary urban infrastructure. That means to say Putin's words are very, very at odds with reality.

We're desperately trying to contact our relatives, but there's been no response since we heard the train was hijacked in Bolan and passengers were taken hostage.

My cousin, a woman and her small child were on board, travelling from Quetta to Multan to pick up a family member. I'm frantic with worry, but no-one's telling me what's happening or if they're safe.

What we were aiming to do was to actually document the scope of nurses' mental health and see how it was similar and also different across different countries.

So my research consortium, we were able to take the early data from our ongoing study and actually start taking a look at where we were seeing similarities and differences, but also seeing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and showing how really it didn't matter where you were, if you were a nurse, the pandemic was having a significant impact on your mental health.

Well, we were finding about an average of, I mean, it was quite a wide range of between 20 and Sixty percent of our nurses responding reported symptoms of anxiety or reported that they had depression or symptoms of depression. And so, you know, the average overall was running about somewhere around about 30 percent.

So slightly higher than what's typically seen from most general mental health statistics.

Well, what's interesting is for a lot of the countries involved in this particular study, they had no baseline mental health statistics available. of their nurses. So this was one of the first studies to really, as far as we can tell, for many of the low and middle income countries to actually capture sort of a baseline idea of how are nurses doing and what is the state of their mental health.

And it did strike me particularly that nurses in Mongolia reported particularly high rates of both anxiety and depression overall compared to most of the other countries. But we also noticed that for some other countries that many people said, no, I don't have anxiety, I don't have depression, but I have a lot of the symptoms.

So there's also a stigma that is coming through in our data where nurses may not feel comfortable reporting or naming that they have anxiety or depression. But they're more comfortable sharing that, well, yeah, I have a lot of the symptoms that go with anxiety and depression.

Well, one of the things that we saw was nurses tended to turn toward either their co-workers or their family and friends first, and that was their primary source of support. And that was true regardless of whether it was high-income countries or low-income countries. So your inner circle is the first place that people start when they're looking for support.

But the question is, is when it gets beyond what just your friends, your family members maybe even for those who comfort in religious support from a clergy person, then what happens, though, when you get beyond that need? And that's where we need to figure out things like what happens if you do need that support.

One of my consortium members, they hadn't completed the study yet, but they shared that USAID had actually been doing rapid response training in mental health. for health workers in Malawi due to the recent events in the U.S. and the stopping of USAID programming that those efforts have been stopped at the moment.

So, you know, there was examples out there of being able to do some rapid intervention and provide support in low-income settings, but the legacy and how sustainable that will be now is under question.

It literally smells like petrol. And this is the water that you're expected to use to drink, cook, wash. It smells like we're in the fuel station. I guess that's why it's even foaming up.

So do you have to be careful how much water you use? Yes.

The other important thing for us, that the palace is now with the Sudanese people, the place where the palace is located is the heart of Khartoum, which is the capital. That's where most of the ministries are located and the government institutions. So it's the heart of Khartoum. And when the palace is back, that means the area is back to the Sudanese people.

And hopefully this war is coming to an end just in that area. The last days were terrible, actually. They were terrifying days because the shelling was going out and coming in.

Today is the fifth day. After seven o'clock, we hear the bombs every day until the middle of the night.

I visited her when she was shooting The Whales of August, which was her penultimate film. And she sat down and she had a very imperious manner. I mean, the way she could look at you made you feel like you were, well, vermin or something. The thing that I remember is she was smoking like a trooper. She had two cigarettes going on either side of her during the interview. She fumbled for a third one.

I was very intimidated by her.

And I listen to it and I think, oh, Lord, this woman, she was really tough to deal with.

Miss Davis, you haven't done a theatrical film for quite a long time. What was it that attracted you to this particular picture?

I was a bit shell-shocked after it. I spoke to a production assistant. I said, how did I do? And they said to me, well, she made mincemeat out of you. And I thought, oh, wow, that's pretty bad. But she was the real thing. There was something very authentic about her.

And the thing I think about the press at that time, the kind of film movie press, is that they loved her because she gave great quotes. I remember covering a press conference when she was really holding forth, saying how much she liked all the awards that she had won. She won two Oscars in her life.

You got hold of James Cagney.

This was towards the end of his career. And I went into the room and he was a diminished figure. He was in a wheelchair. He was, I would say, three quarters coherent. I recorded about half an hour with him. We edited it down. And it was a memorable encounter.

When you look back at your filmmaking career, which to you is the best film that you've ever made?

So you do it. I do remember... being surprised by what an amazing hoofer, what an amazing dancer he actually was, James Cagney. This business of interviewing stars at junkets, they're called, is when the film studios allow access under very controlled circumstances and very controlled time to the stars. And one of the first times you met Tom Cruise was at one of these junkets.

And you tried, I think, to get some news out of Cruise.

I went to interview him for the film Top Gun. Some people charged that the film was really glorifying combat, and I put that to Tom Cruise, and he got a wee bit snippy. Not terribly, but a wee bit snippy.

Recently, I think you tracked down Ethan Hawke, and this was at the Berlin Festival in the last few days. He's in the middle of doing, what, 30 interviews a day, and you try and ask him to reflect on the process. What does he say?

Well, yes, it was actually last Tuesday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin at the Berlin Film Festival. They were having a junket. A film actually that's pretty good called Blue Moon from Richard Linklater, in which Ethan Hawke has a great role. The clock was ticking. I only had five minutes.

He talked about the role, and then I prodded him about what was it like from his point of view to participate in the junket.

But you seem quite authentic at this moment.

We've never been stronger in government. We've become the second strongest force as the alternative for Germany and we have now firmly established ourselves as a people's party.

And... She was smoking like a trooper. She had two cigarettes going on either side of her. I was very intimidated by her. And also with myself, my voice was a little bit higher. And I listened to it and I think, oh, Lord.

My father and grandfather always told me the sea is our livelihood. It's the best blessing we've had as a community to have access to the sea. So to always take advantage of the resources that we have out at sea instead of asking for a handout.

Even myself, there was a time where I stopped fishing to try to get involved in business and open up a store and things of that nature. But it didn't work out, so I returned to fishing. A lot of people have stopped fishing, and the reason for that is the difficulties out at sea.

We don't know where these foreign fishing trawlers are coming from and why they're here, but they're making life more difficult for us. And sooner or later, if this continues, you're not going to see any fishermen left.

Yes, we've taken up our issues in different manners. We've spoken to the media about it. We've even spoken to the government about these foreign trawlers and the difficulties and the challenges they cause our fishing community. But to hear other people saying, oh, they're licensed to be here and things of that nature. But that still doesn't give them a right to make our lives difficult.

Another thing is our region is currently engaged in a war. So they probably have other issues more bigger. That's probably why they're not getting back to us. But I do hope one day that they take our concerns serious and change does happen.

Yes, I'm aware of fishermen that became pirates.

These people had difficulties which pushed them to the brink and ultimately went down that path in life. But it's because of the illegal fishing. I mean, you guys call them pirates, but a lot of people from our community don't view them as pirates. They're defending their land, their seas, their territory, their waters, what belongs to them. And they have a right to do so. This is our waters.

We are fishing here. And these guys come here and take our resources. And if it continues like this, I do believe piracy will return to this area.

Only God knows what the future holds. But I hope my children get a good opportunity at education. I hope they become successful and educated. No one knows how these waters are going to become in the future.

I focused on the gut microbiomes of these groups. So all participants handed in stool samples and we sequenced those samples and looked at the bacterial profiles. And this is a reflection of their gut microbiomes.

Exactly. So we're interested to see how environmental factors impact the microbiomes of these different groups that face all kinds of challenges with their migration. First, we found that there was a very strong link between dietary intake and the microbiome. So we observed that rural Canadians ate a lot less fat and protein and salt.

And they showed a very strong link with their microbiome composition. And we saw that there was a decrease in the diversity of the gut microbiomes in the Amsterdam Ghanaians. And specifically, there were bacteria that we could just not trace back in this Amsterdam group. So there was a lot less diversity.

And diversity is usually something that we see as something healthy, as a healthy characteristic of the microbiome.

Yes, exactly. And that was another important conclusion in this study that we found with the loss of these specific microbes, that there was also an increase in cardiovascular disease and diabetes and obesity. So there seems to be a link between the two. So a loss of these microbes and an increase in cardiovascular risk.

Which is also very important because it means that if we could change the dietary pattern back to a diet that has more diversity in fruits and in vegetables, that we can maybe shift the microbiome back to those of the rural Ghanaians and hopefully also lower the cardiovascular risk.

So that's absolutely right. I think if we can ensure that these people keep the same diversity in their fruit and vegetable intake specifically, then they will be much more likely to stay closer to their original microbiomes.
