And there's this implication that always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you for an argument for the existence of God.
No, that's not what he says.
He says to give the reason for the hope that you have.
Your friend is communicating a hope that you took notice of.

That is literally the word to give an answer that we translate as to give an answer, a defense, or a reason in many English Bible translations is the Greek word apologia, to give an apologetic, to give a defense.
