The Republican-controlled Florida legislature has passed a sweeping elections bill requiring new proof-of-citizenship checks modeled after the federal Save America Act championed by President Trump.

The measure now heads to the governor, who's expected to sign it into law.

Trump has been urging Congress to pass the legislation, calling it the number one priority ahead of the midterm elections.

Though under the Constitution, states hold primary authority over how elections are run.

The Florida law would not take effect until after the midterms.
