This was absolutely my favorite too, a total highlight of the collection.
So Miss Adele goes into this store and immediately she's put off by the atmosphere inside.
It appears to be a Jewish couple who own the store and the man is listening to a radio program in a foreign language.
And every time she mentions the radio program, Zadie puts in capitals righteousness and anger.
because that's what Miss Adele assumes the program is about.
It sounds preachy.
It sounds angry.
And it immediately puts her on guard because, you know, Miss Adele is a transgender woman and she's aware that she might experience, I guess, backlash.
I think she's very defensive about,
She's kind of primed for a fight.
She gets to the point where she's finally got the corset, it fits her, and she's trying to pay.
And this whole time she's been getting more and more angry and more and more frustrated by what she sees to be the man behind the counter judging her.
Every time this couple talks, Miss Adele assumes that they're talking about her.
And in the end, she's the one who explodes.
She accuses them of being racist and kind of flies off into this really volatile rant and lots of swearing and...
Ironically, she kind of ends up saying some pretty racist anti-Semitic things while she's in this flurry of defensiveness and her own righteous anger.
And I think once again, it is that kind of turning on its head.
And it turns out that the man who she thinks has been judging her this whole time actually selected the corset for her, you know, could tell straight away which size she was, what she needed.
It really does.
And you start getting a sense of the transition that Miss Adele has gone through herself.
