You might say, isn't it about time?
But it's really come to a critical head now because of the Asian hornet that came in last year.
And it's a liaison between the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
and the National Biodiversity Centre in Waterford.
And they have an email address, invasives.ie.
And if you see an invasive species, you don't even wait for the Mooney Show to happen on a Monday night.
You send an email immediately to invasives.ie and report that you have seen, now it could be something as awful as an Asian hornet, which they have to hop on immediately in order to stop it becoming established immediately.
It could be one of those processionary moths that we're afraid of our lives are going to attack oak trees.
So it's because of the rapid spread of invasive species, which can be very harmful, that we want this liaison set up to be able to take immediate action when something like that is spotted.
Last year, the Asian hornets came in, were seen in August, and with great work,
They carried out both in Cork and in Cove and in Belfast.
They managed to absolutely get rid of the whole lot of them.
And it was citizen science who saw them and sent in the actual records as to where they saw them.
So it's a very vital step to stop the arrival of more and more invasive species.
Because if we get in at the beginning with them, because people have reported it to that portal, well then action can be taken.
And that works very well.
And that's what they're encouraging people to do as well, to send it in with the photograph.
People have their mobile phones.
So they're keeping their fingers crossed that we won't get Asian hornets.
But if we do, to have the technology for getting rid of them quickly, if they get notification that they're here and indeed other things that might come in as well.
