Fast wäre Werner Boote Spielfilm-Regisseur geworden. Sein Regie-Debüt für einen internationalen Spielfilm – ein Katastrophenfilm – stand bereits in Aussicht. Weil daraus aber nichts wurde, verfilmte er eine Katastrophe, die nicht gespielt werden muss: die Verschmutzung unseres Planeten durch Plastik. Plastic Planet (2009) ist unter den 100 erfolgreichsten Dokumentarfilmen aller Zeiten. Seitdem hat Boote noch mit einer Reihe weiterer Dokumentationen die Gesellschaft aufgerüttelt und der Industrie eingeheizt. Greenwashing, Ressourcenknappheit, Überwachung – ist ein Thema heiß, greift er es garantiert an.
