CRASH: A MEMOIR OF OVERMEDICATION AND RECOVERY is an episode with former Public School Teacher and Special Ed Speech Pathologist Ann Bracken. Ann holds degrees from Towson University and Johns Hopkins University. She is also a poet, a writer and an activist and her poetry, essays, and interviews have appeared in numerous anthologies and journals, including Awakenings Review, Mad in America, Fledgling Rag, and Gargoyle. Ann and I discussed the story of her own son’s ADHD diagnosis and his experience with stimulant medication, as well as Ann’s year-long struggle, trying to get herself off of antidepressants. Her latest book, Crash: A Memoir of Overmedication and Recovery, explores mother-daughter experiences of mismanaged care for depression and chronic pain, and tells the multi-generational story using primary source records, journal entries, and current medical research.
