The study provides an analysis of the initial impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the U.S. labor market since the introduction of generative AI (ChatGPT) in November 2022.The authors conclude that—despite widespread public anxiety about job losses—their data indicates no substantial, economy-wide disruption or acceleration in the rate of change in the occupational mix that can be clearly attributed to AI. Historical precedent suggests that the full effects of widespread technological change typically materialize over decades, not months, which aligns with the current findings of stability. To reach this conclusion, the researchers examined changes in the occupational mix compared to past technological shifts (like the internet), as well as theoretical AI "exposure" data from OpenAI and actual AI usage data from Anthropic, finding no clear relationship between these metrics and changes in employment or unemployment.
