Instead of the usual exams and coding puzzles, they’re now judging models on “economically valuable tasks” – proper jobs like drafting a legal brief, planning patient care, or even sorting out property paperwork. It’s called GDP-Val, which is a dreadful name, but the idea makes sense: stop training AIs to ace abstract tests and see how they fare in the work people actually get paid to do. It’s more grounded, a bit more unnerving, and definitely more useful if we’re talking about AI reshaping industries rather than just academic leaderboards. Alongside that, I had a look at Pulse – OpenAI’s new “proactive” mode inside ChatGPT. Think of it as a digital butler nudging you first thing in the morning with a personalised news brief, a bit like Duolingo’s owl but less passive aggressive. It’s rolling out to the pricey plans first, and yes, it comes with all the privacy trade-offs you’d expect, but the functionality is, useful? Finally, I touched on Google’s DORA report showing that 90% of developers now use AI in their coding workflows. That number has crept up fast – whether you buy the hype or not, 90% is significant.
