Nascuda a Irlanda en una família catòlica, Cathy Sweeney (Derry, 1948) va venir a Mallorca de ben joveneta per aprendre castellà: aquí va comprendre que potser no havia triat el millor lloc per fer-ho. Aprendria la llengua local en poc temps, gràcies a la seva curiositat i habilitat per aprendre llengües. Va viure els Troubles irlandesos des de Mallorca, on va treballar com a professora d'anglès i, després, a l'administració de la UIB.
