You Don't Get to Be Perfect as a Doctor On one hand, we can all nod our heads at the idea that perfectionism is unrealistic, unfair to expect of ourselves and even detrimental to try to aim for... ... But what about when you're a doctors? What about when your performace effects other people in their most vulnerable states? ... Isn't this a time where we really should be perfect? In this episode, we discuss the unrealistic expectation of perfection in medicine. We bring to light a difficult fact, which is that doctors are humans and humans are fallible. At times, this means patients will, to our devastation, not be perfectly cared for. We discuss the importance and our reliance on the "Swiss Cheese Model" of caring for patients and how teamwork is essential to minimising and preventing medical errors. Main Points: Doctors are expected to be perfect, but this is an unrealistic expectation. Ironically, perfectionism can lead to burnout and medical errors. The "Swiss Cheese Model" shows how multiple layers of defense can prevent errors. Teamwork is essential in medicine. Relying on the individual being infallible is a strategy doomed to harm patients. We invite doctors to embrace their humanity and ask for help when needed. Key Quotes: "We will all have examples of times where we personally have been right at the cusp of causing harm and saved by the Swiss Cheese model..." - Dr Becc "...it's not just in our heads...there's this lack of tolerance for doctors not being precise and exact and all knowing..." - Dr Kristeen Barker "...thank goodness we are so lucky to get to work with colleagues..." - Dr Becc "...they are the true heroes in this situation..." - Dr Kristeen Barker Have you ever been saved by a teammate?
