S1 - E73 - Faculty office hours (Nudges)

FACULTY OFFICE HOURS - WHO ARE THEY FOR?One of the things that has always surprised us was the unwillingness of first-year students to visit faculty during office hours. After talking to many students, we realized the unwillingness was not intentional and that they thought that professor office hours were times faculty were NOT to be disturbed. They thought these hours were similar to the listed hours of their high school teachers, a time set aside to do projects and work.To combat this, we launched a campaign to help students understand that office hours are the posted times professors will be available in their offices to meet with students. We inform students that they paid for these hours; therefore, they need to feel free to use them. However, we also remind students that this is not a social open house. Most professors expect that students who show up for office hours have specific questions or concerns related to the class. The purpose of office hours is to give busy students access to busy professors.
