Felichi Mae Arines is a PhD student in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan. She worked at the International Rice Research Institute, where she was part of a team tasked with developing iron- and zinc-enriched rice. She recently obtained a Barbour Scholarship, which is awarded to outstanding women graduate students from Asia and the Middle East. We talked about different perceptions on basic science and applied science, Felichi’s research on ubiquitin ligases and decluttering enzymes, stories of communicating research with non-scientists, tips for communicating research to the public, the similarities and differences between STEM education in the Philippines and in the United States, and more.
