This Spotlight honors David S. Seres, MD, ScM, PNS, FASPEN, director of the Medical Nutrition Program and associate professor of medicine in the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He has over 30 years of experience in nutrition support consulting, clinical research, and teaching. He’s currently the section editor for nutrition at UpToDate. Dr. Seres shares his thoughts on how the field of nutrition has changed, and not changed (lack of randomized control trial data), and what’s to come (personalized nutrition). He leads one of the few nutrition fellowship programs and points out that in the ICU, patients on average receive only 45% of the calories prescribed to them. He believes that ASPEN is an excellent way for young physicians to develop relationships, find mentors, develop their own credibility and have the opportunity to critically discuss the nutrition research to help further advance the field. Physician Spotlight is a forum for outstanding Senior Leaders, Young Rising Stars, and International Colleagues in the field of nutrition to discuss important topics and ideas that impact patient care.
