Member Spotlight: Juan Carlos Lopez-Delgado, MD, PhD

This video features Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez-Delgado, Professor of Critical and Emergency Care at the University of Barcelona. Dr. Lopez-Delgado’s journey to nutrition was not a straight path. He began his career in general critical care and developed an interest in nutrition after spending time as a resident in England, sparking his passion for metabolism and the liver. As a researcher in muscle metabolism, Dr. Lopez-Delgado shares that the use of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) during the pandemic helped his team identify how important muscle mass is in relation to mortality. He continues research today in this area with the use of BIA. Dr. Lopez-Delgado also emphasizes the importance of mentorship, noting how members from the physician engagement committee have helped to mentor and challenge him in his career. He encourages clinicians to make friends along the way and be a good person. Dr. Lopez-Delgado likes to spend his free time with his wife and 2 sons, especially watching fútbol.
