This video honors Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FCCM, FASPEN, Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery, in the division of Critical Care Medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC. Dr. Wischmeyer’s nutrition journey began in high school when he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and was on parenteral nutrition for a year. Many of the medicine he was given had severe side effects. It motivated him to get into medicine and do research on alternative treatments. Dr. Wischmeyer’s first grant was from the ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation; it set him up for his NIH K Award. Dr. Wischmeyer provides tips for finding mentors in clinical nutrition, talks about an online nutrition fellowship at Duke, and shares what he thinks are the pressing questions in clinical nutrition. Physician Spotlight is a forum for outstanding Senior Leaders, Young Rising Stars, and International Colleagues in the field of nutrition to discuss important topics and ideas that impact patient care.
