Through the Looking Glass: Prioritizing Open Dialogue and Transparency in the AI

Recorded live at the 2025 ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego, this session featured Annie Chechitelli, Chief Product Officer at Turnitin, and Tricia Bertram Gallant, Director of the Academic Integrity Office and Triton Testing Center at UC San Diego. The session was emceed by Kate Sutherland, Managing Director at Tyton Partners.The discussion centered on the critical need for transparency and open dialogue around the integration of generative AI in education. While students often lead in adopting new AI tools, they are rarely involved in shaping the policies that govern their use—creating a disconnect between practice and guidance. The panel explored how educators can better understand when and how students use AI to ensure authentic learning and original thinking. Likewise, it emphasized the importance of equipping students with clear expectations and strategies to use AI responsibly. The session called for collaborative approaches to define rules of engagement that support academic integrity and empower meaningful learning in the AI era.
