Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Yeah, there should be some passion. This doesn't have to be boring, boring, boring.
You don't get bored by baseball. Okay, one thing the game needs is more people like you, you, you. Still have grown men run around tight hands.
It's Mookie Betts. It's Daniel Bard. It's Steve Aoki. Here's Saltz Lamacchia. This is Brock Holtz. Hey, this is John Lester. Baseball isn't boring. Baseball isn't boring. Welcome to Baseball Isn't Boring.
Here's your host, Rob Radford. There's something missing in Lucas Chialito's life. There is nobody I'd rather be talking to in person. In person. Right. I mean, it just hits different, doesn't it? Yeah. We're here. So a little bit behind the scenes. I flew down to Florida. Lucas has given me the greatest gift of all.
Chapter 2: What is Lucas Giolito's current situation in Major League Baseball?
A trip to Florida. There you go. And it's my wife's birthday. Happy birthday, Jen Bradford. There is no better way to celebrate a birthday than this for me to sit down with you. There it is. There we go. Nice shirt, by the way. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's pretty solid. All right. Well, how are you? I'm good. First of all, a couple observations. Your beard has never looked better.
It's a little ragged right now, but it's okay. Okay. Has it ever been this full?
Yeah, spring training last year. Okay. The experiment was huge and it got really uncomfortable. Okay. This is just like lack of grooming, I guess you could say. I have no idea. I don't have a barber I trust out here.
Can I tell, because this is all about me, the other day, I'm like, I got to do this. Wrong attachment.
so wrong attachment so you have a real short yeah there's no turning back yeah yeah i don't know if you've ever been there but yeah i so a lot of time when i do mine i freehand it so it's like there's no guard and i'm just like going through looking at different angles trying to like even it out and sometimes you go deep and you'll take a chunk out and then you have to put the guard on there's no turning back try and fix it yeah it's no tournament
And also, as I said to you, you're out throwing. You look fantastic throwing, by the way. But also, you lost weight. Yeah. I mean, you are literally in the best shape of your life.
Yeah. It's hard to say best shape of your life, right? We've talked about this before. We've made t-shirts. It's like the meme of baseball players get spring training. I'm in the best shape of my life. I think it's kind of relative. you know, it's when you're like 23, it's easier to move around than when you're 31. But as far as like my body comp, it's very good right now.
What's your body comp? Give me some good body comp numbers. And by the way, we shouldn't know where I, cause I want a Cressy performance center in Florida. So
Yes. You've been to work where you've been. Yeah, I've been here all off season and obviously now leaking into baseball season. It's a great, great spot for training and throwing.

Chapter 3: How does Lucas Giolito feel about his training and preparation?
So it is what it is. And I just, you know, keep on with what I'm doing.
Stay ready. When you go through the waves, like the off-season waves, like it's one thing to say, you know, we do the podcast and you're like crickets in January, right? That's one thing. But then you go, then, you know, more guys get signed. And then also you go into spring training. Okay, something happens to a guy.
Have you experienced that at all or have these models, the perception of you from front offices remain pretty much the same? You know what I mean? In what sense? Well, in the sense of, like, there can be a team where... maybe doesn't show a lot of interest and maybe then it gets someone hurt or maybe just says, Hey, there's a good picture out there.
Like I'll give you an example, like Jordan Montgomery a couple of years ago, the Arizona wasn't bank. That wasn't their plan, but they, Hey, this is a good picture. And have you seen any of it like go up and down or has this just been like, no, we value Lucas this way and we're going to stick to it, you know, from front office point of view.
I've heard a lot of like, Like we value Lucas, he can make our team better, but we, you know, other factors lead to... What, like financial factors? Yeah, generally. Okay. Yeah, it's like, oh, we don't have the, we don't really have like the space for that. No. It's like, okay.
The, well, when they say that, but then, you know, player teams have problems or get hurt, whatever. Have you seen any... It's a different approach from teams when these guys get hurt, when their roster changes in the last, let's say, I think it stays relatively consistent.
Does it really? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the thing is, knowing that I would be on sign going into the season. You know that there's going to be injuries. You know there's going to be poor performance. You know, guys will get sent down, get hurt, whatever it might be. You can look around the league. There's a few rotations that are missing key guys now because they got hurt.
And it's like, okay, when that happens, then it will start to heat up. It seems to be. It seems to be. You know, without... oversharing, it seems to be. So, yeah, we'll see how things go. In the meanwhile, I'm ready to go. I've been here. It does feel a bit like Groundhog Day, but, you know, this is what I do for a living. So, you know, just staying ready, staying prepared.
When was the toughest time? Was it when guys went to spring training? Was it as spring training is going along? Was it opening day? Is it now sitting here? You're talking about emotionally? Yeah, just in terms of like, man, I really want to play. I love...

Chapter 4: What challenges has Lucas Giolito faced during his free agency?
Or even the way that hitters approach things. You know, because you know how it works. We've talked about this. It's like they're valuing one thing one second, they're valuing this the next.
Yeah, I'd say right now... I mean, as far as valuating pitching, velocity is huge, swing and miss, swing and missing zone. The expected numbers are getting weighted a lot, fifth and numbers like that.
You know, that probably has something to do with the position I'm in right now to where, like, teams will look at my expected numbers and my, like, underlying numbers from last year and be like, he's going to regress. Yeah. So you can't argue with it. It is what it is. It can only work on getting better.
I mean, I've gone on a rant about this. I went on a rant on the radio about it in the middle of a game. Because I'm sure you listen to the AM radio spring training red-size games. But for the last three innings, actually, my partner, Cooper, he said, we're talking about Quinn Priester. And Quinn Preece is like, oh, well, some, you know, I said, oh, you get a really good year.
He's like, oh, yeah, but some teams are worried that he's underlying. I'm like, underlying? He got outs. Like, he got outs. And he did it, by the way, all the way to the end.
Yeah, I don't know. There isn't, that's the thing is you don't have analytic stats that quantify. I like to call it dog, right? Yeah. There's no analytics for that. So, you know, I think that certain...
certain teams probably all teams value that to a certain extent but we are living in a world where the the computers dictate a lot and uh models projections things like that so you know that's just the that's where we're at in the game it is what it is just before i get to your observations about the game you just made me think about without naming names but there must been guys who were signed to deals and you're like
look at me, I got outs, you know, instead of projections. I mean, again, not naming names, but it must've been that way.
I feel like when I look at free agency as a whole, you know, looking at like starting pitchers in my class that were free agents and what they signed for and who they signed with, I think it kind of checked out.

Chapter 5: How does Lucas Giolito view his physical condition and performance?
So... you know, it's always something that says, like, later in my career, I played for Team Italy. Like, if I knew that I wouldn't be competing at this time, then I probably would have done it.
But I also, and I also, like, view it, maybe, again, maybe this is a stupid way of viewing it, but we had talked about, I don't think that, like, the end of the season thing impacted, because people see you throw and everything else, but if you went out there and dealt, like, just another showcase for you, you know? Yeah. I mean, I'm just spitballing. Yeah.
But, yeah.
didn't come together that well, the, um, so, but you do his another, my expert way of morphing into the, the, the video games, um, you watch, you sit, you watch games. Do you look for it? So are you watching games? Just, Hey, I, this game's coming up. That game's coming up. I might just watch. And is there a player that you've watched? You said, shit, I didn't know he was that good. Oh, my.
That's a good question. I have to think. What's the dude, Soriano from... I knew he was going to be good.
Yeah. I knew he was going to be really good. Yeah.
He was... I think you told me that at one point.
My first start with the Angels, I got traded. We're in Toronto. Yeah. And I got pulled... it was like, I got pulled in like the fifth or sixth inning, like bases loaded or something like that. My pitch count wasn't very high. I was like, damn dude. Like I was a little frustrated. Like, let me get out of my own jam. I always want to get out of my own jam. Right.
I don't want to, I don't want to put that pressure on the reliever. Their jobs, their jobs are already hard enough. It's like, this is my mess. Let me either get out of it or give it up. And then you can bring
