Chapter 1: What predictions did Bradfo make about Joe Ryan's performance?

0.031 - 30.253

Yeah, there should be some passion. This doesn't have to be boring. Hey, one thing the game needs is more people like you. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. Welcome to Baseball Isn't Boring. Here's your host, Rob Radford. Greetings, everybody. At BB Isn't Boring, at BB Isn't Boring, it's the social accounts for Baseball Isn't Boring.

0

30.273 - 53.57

And this is the podcast for Baseball Isn't Boring, Boots on the Ground. I'm in Fort Myers, Florida right now, which hosts two teams, the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. And I'll be jetting around all over the place in Florida, all over the place in spring training. To hopefully get you the best podcast, the best interviews, the best stuff.

0

53.59 - 74.497

As we storm into the WBC and then storm into the regular season. There's a lot of good stuff coming. But I had a lot of good stuff and been eight, nine days down here. And one guy that I knew I wanted to talk to and wanted to talk to again... For a while, is Joe Ryan. We had him on two times last year.

0

74.577 - 97.869

We had him, sat down with him during the season, and then sat down or caught up with him for a few minutes at the All-Star game. And remember, that was in the heart of the trade rumors. And of course, the picture of him walking side-by-side with Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman. This percolated those rumors even more. But alas, he was not traded. Alas, he's still with the Minnesota Twins.

0

98.51 - 120.935

And that is where I caught up with him, with the Minnesota Twins, in the dugout for another great conversation. Honestly, I really, really like talking to Joe. One of my favorite people to talk to. There's a lot of people who are my favorites, but he's up there. And it's because he's insightful. entertaining, real, genuine, and just a good guy to talk to.

121.116 - 147.622

So I sat down with him, and another good guy to talk to, another guy who was one of my favorites, is a guy who was pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. A guy who is one of the two players who have committed to getting baseball isn't boring tattoos after winning the World Series last year. One of them was Michael Kopach. He is not the person I'm talking about. The other was Anthony Banda.

147.943 - 168.421

He is the person I'm talking to or about. I caught up with him because, yes, he is now also in Fort Myers with the Minnesota Twins. So first up, you're going to hear from Joe Ryan. We talk about trade rumors. We talk about WBC. We talk about his evolution, all of it. As I said, always a good time with Joe.

168.962 - 190.088

And then right after that, you're going to hear from Anthony Banda, and we kind of workshop how he's going to get this baseballs and boring tattoo while also touching on his thoughts and feelings about leaving the Dodgers and landing with the Twins. All right. Again, at BB isn't boring. At BB isn't boring. By the way, huge news coming, I think, this week.

190.228 - 213.341

I think this week in regards to some elite, elite baseball is in boring gear. And when I say elite, I mean this is next-level stuff. All right, but until then, I want you to sit back, enjoy this podcast. First, it's going to be Joe Ryan. Then it's going to be Anthony Banda. All right, guess what? There's no human being on the planet I'd rather be talking to right now than Joe Ryan.

Chapter 2: How did Joe Ryan handle trade rumors in the past year?

220.821 - 241.762

Good morning. I know, this is like spring training. I was talking to Anthony Banda. That poor guy hasn't dealt with East Coast time. Yeah, I was yelling for him. I'm like, he's got to be cooked right now. It's unbelievable. It's a tough let in or whatever, but he's doing well. It is weird. People don't understand spring training, how counterintuitive it is.

0

242.003 - 262.963

I don't know what time you wake up normally. Yeah. It's kind of nice. To be honest, I've been enjoying it. We had a baby this offseason, so... Yeah. The sleep, I would say, wasn't as consistent, but Claire took care of everything, so it was amazing. And, yeah, I wasn't dying too bad on sleep, but it's been...

0

262.943 - 280.429

It's the first couple of days or an adjustment, but at the same time, I think there's enough adrenaline there that you're just like, all right, we're doing this, get up, go. And yeah, it's less like snoozing. Like I'm not hitting the snooze ever. I just wake up. You just wake up. I just think weird thing too, or like, I don't know what it is. I don't have a clock in my room, but.

0

280.763 - 303.832

I'll wake up like 10 minutes before my alarm switch to go off. It doesn't matter. That's good though. Yeah. The internal clock is like the best. Yes. Yeah. So that's been, that's been happening lately. So it's, uh, yeah, it feels good. I sleep. It doesn't bother me. Well, now that you have to like, speaking of like adjusting, you have the WBC stuff, right? It's weird. Like, it's not weird.

0

303.893 - 327.124

It's congratulations, by the way. That's awesome. But, you know, having gone and seen different iterations of WPC, to be honest with you, I was sort of like... you know, the players aren't ready. I saw players, you know, not being, I think players are getting ready more. They have a better handle of it. You now have a better, you probably talk to guys of what to do and everything else like that.

327.585 - 337.618

So if you can just take me through about that process about, and I remember talking to David Robertson about this after the last one, he said, the guys have a much, much better,

337.987 - 366.154

grasp of this and it partly is probably just talking to guys so just take me through if you can what you did yeah so there's just kind of like the just different schools of thought with like offseason throwing and getting ready for a regular season regardless of the wbc um and just whether or not to put the ball down for a month or to put the ball down for 10 days at the end of the season um so that's kind of been like this theme that i've been thinking about experimenting with and then in

366.134 - 392.175

20 what was it 24 I got hurt so I was down and didn't really get to start my throwing a little bit earlier so this year I was able to do that and kind of just get into a normal offseason and and start everything a little bit earlier which I've really enjoyed I feel like I've been more prepared coming into camp for the earlier lives like I'm doing a couple more ups but regardless of that I just feel better on the mound and pitchers feel like they're a really good spot and I can just make

392.155 - 419.827

some adjustments a little bit easier now. So overall, I feel like I'm more prepared for the season, which I'm grateful for. I get to go represent the country and play for Team USA, which is always an honor and always something that I'm going to take the opportunity to do if I get that. So, yeah, I think there's a lot of positives to this preparation. And, yeah, D-Rob, it was fun to watch him.

Chapter 3: What are Joe Ryan's thoughts on preparing for the WBC?

560.459 - 580.527

So I can just keep, it'll be good. Like you want your teammates going to teach you like a one finger shit. Yeah, exactly. I know. I'm excited to talk to them and hear what they have to say and what they're doing and, and pick up maybe a couple of things. And, um, obviously it's an insane rotation to be a part of and, and a lot of guys to learn from. So I'm excited for that.

0

580.547 - 583.791

Just to, to be around such a talented group and, and,

0

583.771 - 609.947

pick their brains too is there anything that you did like evolve like anything that you did sort of add or change or i know that that's like a beginning of spring training cliche question but yeah i didn't know i would say no i think just honing in on uh what was good from my pitches last year what which ones needed a little bit of work and find out some good cues on those to just keep them consistent and then uh i'm gonna add in one thing in there that

0

609.927 - 628.013

It's just kind of like in the back pocket at some point if I need to, but we don't even talk about it. It's the 35-inch sweeper. Yeah, I know. God. Something just happened the other day. The balls were weird. Everything was moving like crazy. Well, this is what spring training's for, right? Yeah, yeah. I mean, to catch the rain. Yeah.

0

628.033 - 641.234

But we, that's again, like when we talked about that last year, about your 30-inch, like that pitch, more people came up, I saw that, I saw that, I saw that. And I know that that's just one pitch. Congratulations on that.

641.614 - 656.742

So how weird was, you know, you go through last year, the deadline, you go through this offseason and, you know, every front office treats that sort of thing differently in terms of communication with players. What was it like for you?

656.722 - 686.02

I mean I was we had the baby and I was excited for the WBC and like I think the buzz around that was whatever it was it's the off season I thought it was probably good for baseball to just have a lot of media stuff going on maybe like I don't usually pay attention to that stuff and so it was just like I would see some things here and there but like I wasn't I was like worried about it at all and I think the front office did a good job handling that and

686 - 706.796

Yeah, I didn't really, it wasn't this like, it wasn't a problem or anything, and I didn't really... I think you handled it pretty well. Yeah, I don't know, it's just, it's kind of fun. It's like, you're listening to things, and that's about it. Well, I was going to say, at the All-Star game, I don't know if it was planned, the pitcher walking side-by-side with Crochet and Bregman.

706.916 - 722.878

Definitely not planned. No, no. Definitely not planned. But that was funny. But again, you handled it well. This is part of the evolution. And the most important thing is having the family evolving. And you have a good home here. Yeah, it's great. They've been great.

Chapter 4: How has Joe Ryan evolved as a pitcher since last season?

722.898 - 733.472

And Tom's doing a really good job. He's in camp now. And I think he's going to be here for a while down in the spring. So, no, it's great to see...

0

733.452 - 760.557

everyone again and I mean we have a great staff and a great group here and um no I'm I don't I wasn't like seeking a trade by any means I don't want to get traded in that way so it's like I think you're just kind of listening to the noise and I think the fun or whatever I want to say about that is more just like the that you don't you don't really have control over that situation um so just you have to be open to like hey anything can happen but at the same time like I'm gonna stay where my feet are at and

0

760.537 - 782.629

enjoy my time in minnesota and try to win as many games as we can and be the last team on the field you mentioned like tong being here and like there is probably that element of through with chaos the chaos of treading a crap load of guys at the deadline the chaos of another off season but then you land here and you're like okay and i know that you know derek has to do his thing but

0

782.609 - 802.457

But you land here and you just say, all right, this is the team we have. This is the commitment they're making. I can see the good in this team. You know what I'm saying? Absolutely. I think, I mean, whatever was said about what happens at the deadline and stuff, I mean, the reality is if you're going to...

0

802.437 - 829.795

trade a lot of guys like I think they did it the right way it's a lot of guys that were on expiring contracts and um they got a good return and like I think the players we have here are are really good and like we're watching Taj the other day and yeah Griffin was one of my best friends in the game and and being out here it's like all right I'm watching Taj do his thing and he's getting whatever more swing and miss than Griffin got all season last year in one life

829.977 - 852.336

You want me to cut that? You want me to, like, send that to him? No, but, no, Taj looks great. Like, I got to play with Taj when I was at the Rays. We got drafted together, so it's great to see him over here. Like, I hope Griffin has the best success. So, like, I don't – it's not – I don't know. It's just – it's how it is, and, like, Mick looks great. All these guys look great coming in.

852.997 - 869.42

So, yeah, there's a give and take. Like, we got a lot of good players in return, and – I think, I mean, the organization's in a really good spot. So I don't think it's just like necessarily needs to be this horrible thing. Like there's a reason that it happened. And if we had played better, maybe it wouldn't have happened.

869.46 - 888.431

But at the same time, like there's a lot of guys on one year deals too that gets brought up as like, we got rid of this whole team. It's like, no, it's... It's business, man. It's business. And we're here to win now. I mean, we have a really good team and guys are good. I think we played really good baseball at times in the second half and had a lot of games.

889.333 - 909.343

Yeah, if we if there's maybe a couple of things were different, we could have maybe kept winning, uh, a lot more, but, um, no, I think, I think we're, we're in a really good spot. I told you, I sat here right here in the bench with Derek Falvey last year, the last day of spring training, one of the last days I said, Joe Ryan's going to be in the Cy Young conversation. Um,

Chapter 5: What insights does Joe Ryan share about his pitching strategy?

1140.351 - 1162.678

That's crazy. Good for them. Yeah, good for them. So, I don't know, I didn't mean to. I was going to keep adding pitches so they can't code them in quick enough. Well, here's the last thing on this. Rich Hill came on, and now I don't know, he's like, players should get the licensing fee for the image and likeness, right? Yeah, I think that's fair. All right, well, put it on the list.

0

1162.698 - 1186.692

I'll take that. Good job, Rich. I like that. All right, well, hey, listen, you've been always driving us through your time, and I will once again predict you to be a Saiyan. Thank you, Rob. I appreciate it. All right, guess what? There's no human being on the planet I'd rather be talking to at 8 a.m. in the morning than Nancy Banda. Nah, who's that Red Sox guy? I forget. Oh, Peyton Tolley?

0

1186.712 - 1210.228

Yeah, you'd better talk to him. That's false. You know, there's a big difference between him and you, besides you having much more skin in the game in terms of Major League pitching. This is no knock on him. No, he's great. But he also has not committed to a baseball sport. Yeah, you're right. So that was the immediate thing that I thought of. I'm not going to lie.

0

1210.268 - 1234.71

I'm like, are we going to get the tattoo done? I'm like, how good are Fort Myer tattoo artists? You know what? I actually got some tattoos here in Clearwater. I don't know how far that is from here. It's not close. Yeah. I don't know the state really that well. I'm going to Google best tattoo artist in Fort Myer. You know what? Yeah, let's look it up. Let's do it, and we can figure that out.

0

1234.69 - 1260.816

and what it'll probably be what if our tattoo be pretty quick it's totally up to you like you don't have to get the same one joe and i did if you can get anything you want okay so oh so it could be any design yeah like any base bib like i showed you the new logo the you know like whatever i mean it can be whatever if michael kopeck signs with the twins of red socks are you gonna

1261.302 - 1279.733

Because he was the other one that's supposed to get it as well. Yeah. If he hasn't already. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I think I was thinking about it, too, because, you know, there's off season. I go into the off season and I usually typically I'll have like a moment where I'll have like an itch to go get a tattoo. Right. Yeah. I have this idea.

1280.624 - 1299.52

And I was just like, well, I mean, obviously I got Mr. Cartoon that I want to get tattooed by. You know, that's going to be a little harder than that. Can I just tell you, I don't know if I told you this. I probably did. But one of the first things Joe said when he got out of that chair was, Ben is going to be so jealous.

Chapter 6: What tattoo plans does Anthony Banda discuss in the episode?

1299.82 - 1320.267

Yeah, I am. I am. And... No, I met his camp, Mr. Cartoon's camp, and they've been great. They're amazing people. So I'm looking forward to it. Still I am, although it's going to be a little harder now, but...

0

1320.719 - 1345.36

um that's something that that spot is kind of reserved for you know what he wants to do as far as like with the design i have in mind okay two rings oh um but we'll figure that out and cross that bridge all right all right all right we'll work on it yeah i think we can get a tattoo place here and find something and make some time you get a spot yeah i don't want to take the mr cartoon spot
