Be There in Five

Pinnie For Your Thoughts

03 Jul 2022

Description

This week, Kate takes on the topic of P.E. class and snorkels through the obscure political origins of the Presidential Physical Fitness exam, the trauma of locker rooms, public weigh-ins, wearing of never-washed mesh ‘pinnies,’ and the annual dangling of herself and her dignity from a pull-up bar, among other memorable elements of 90s/00s gym class culture that would likely not hold up today. She also talks about her tall girl complex and body image issues and wonders how metrics of athletic prowess influenced her sense of physical identity, then muses about how not being ‘talented and gifted’ likely had similar scholastic implications. Mostly she does things like complain about how traumatizing running the mile was for a good 10 minutes, but not before examining the weirdness of loose gym uniform shorts and the frequency of relying on a peer to hold your feet downwind. Part personal anecdote, part historical research, part crowdsourced, this is a lighthearted nostalgic ep that hopefully allows you to escape these trying times over the long weekend.
