Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.465 - 21.472

Well, howdy there, Internet people. It's Belle again. So today, we're going to talk about Trump's filibuster bust. Trump's attempt to push the Senate into getting rid of the filibuster appears to be falling flat. A few Republican senators shifted a bit on their position.

Chapter 2: What is Trump's filibuster bust and why is it significant?

22.213 - 44.537

But right now, they're nowhere near the needed number. It's a you're going to need congressional approval and you don't have the votes type of thing. But the situation led to an interesting question from a Republican. Quote, I'm a Republican, but I watch pretty much every day, even though you're clearly not.

45.318 - 59.299

Because you don't get involved in the sensationalism and constant yelling at the screen that Republican news channels do. I don't agree with your conclusions, but I have never found a fact to not be a fact.

Chapter 3: How are Republican senators reacting to Trump's filibuster strategy?

59.802 - 87.717

You remind me of the nightly news in the 90s, liberal-leaning but honest. I said all of that to ask you a simple question, and really hope you answer. How does getting rid of the filibuster help Republicans? Pushing through a continuing resolution is one thing, but don't we still have the ACA credit problem? Wouldn't this just lead to a Republican loss on the reason for the shutdown anyway?

87.882 - 116.995

Or if they don't do anything, it guarantees a loss at the midterms. 20 million people are going to know they lost their health care. Trump only won by 2 million. Am I not seeing their strategy? Yeah, no. Republicans were so busy being contrarian and following Trump's desire to not negotiate that they walked into a no-win situation in every scenario.

Let's say Democrats cave on the shutdown, which, after the election results, would be a horrible move for them. Please don't do that, guys. Republicans have two options. Republicans can A, move to address the ACA tax credits and extend them, and Democrats win.

138.068 - 162.186

They get to say, Republicans shut down the government, hurt American families and the economy, and then extended the tax credits anyway because they knew we were right. They hurt you for no reason. Or B, they don't extend them and millions of Americans lose their health care as a direct result and Republicans lose their votes.

Another option is they work out a deal to extend the ACA credits in exchange for ACR. Democrats win because the shutdown saved health care for millions. Still another option is ending the filibuster. Cool. They get their CR through without Democratic support. But then the ACA credits pass as well because there are enough Republican senators who would, you know, like to remain senators.

195.713 - 218.059

Then Democrats can push through incredibly popular legislation the next time they have the majority. Mark my words, if Republicans in the filibuster, we'll have student loan forgiveness, Medicare for all, and so on within my lifetime. So yeah, do it. Do it.

219.203 - 241.498

When you run through the options, they all end with Democrats either saving the ACA credits or Republicans just getting spanked at the midterms and probably longer. Once they ignored the advice of experts and passed the one big beautiful for billionaire package without protecting health care, they put themselves in this situation.

241.782 - 264.752

Trump isn't actually the smartest guy in the room, and Republicans have been treating him like he is and doing everything he says. His moves have already created a bunch of major issues for Republicans that they'll be dealing with for years and decades to come. Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
