Bitcoin, network states, and biased algorithms: how do they relate? Is it time we implement higher data standards in tech? This week’s episode not only answers these questions but does so with our very first guest. Severin Deutschmann, Founder and Managing Director of OpenTelos.com, shares his thoughts on: - network states enabling bottom-up regulation - algorithms being designed to control us - the data economy - weaponized algorithms - ethical tech and ethical algorithms - tech’s influence on global affairs - censorship and freedom of speech If anyone can build a network state, which both Balaji Srinivasan and Severin Deutschman suggest is true, then isn’t it imperative that we redefine tech standards to ensure accountability among tech companies? Balaji and Severin both share their thoughts on what makes a good network state leader. In short, you must have good intentions and strong communication skills. Using the network state for good means a leader should be able to organize, delegate, and execute tasks within the network state, while optimizing value proposition. Unsurprisingly, most companies allow algorithmic bias to slip into their code and influence their digital marketing campaigns. Rather than resolve this issue, companies intentionally use algorithmic targeting as a way to increase profits - despite the negative repercussions their algorithms cause, even if that means inciting violence online.
