Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hi, I'm Hannah.
And I'm Sarah. And this is Big Small Talk.
This is the podcast where we try and cover the entirety of the news cycle, from the serious to the frivolous, all in one place. Because loving pop culture doesn't mean you don't understand politics.
And today we're going to be talking about Hanson's press club address, the Last Culture Easter's Culture Awards, South Australian abortion bill narrowly defeated, ARN settles with Carl Sanderland, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns, Norway Prince convicted, and Olivia Rodrigo launches her own music festival.
But before we begin today's episode, we would like to start by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we're recording today, the Gadigal people, and pay our respect to Elders past and present.
Before we get into the actual news, tell me about your time in Orange.
Oh, thank you. I love to talk about my time in Orange. No, we had a nice weekend going to wineries. I feel like a sort of slightly renewed person. I feel like sometimes you, when we don't have a mid-year break planned in the coming days, weeks, you like need to pretend. So like I logged off at midday on Friday and I was like, I'm pretending. I'm going to Europe for three weeks. I love that.
But I just went to Orange for like 36 hours. It was really nice. And we've also had a new full-time starter at Cheek this week and we have two new full-time starters next week. So I'm kind of gone from Orange 48-hour bubble to like, wow, the next month is going to be pretty heavy lifting in terms of like training people, doing normal job. Like it's all happening.
It was so funny that you're talking about Orange.

Chapter 2: How did the South Australian abortion bill fare in the recent vote?
After the reproductive rights questions, Anna Henderson asked her about defunding the SBS effectively.
And what Anna Henderson said, which I think a lot of Australians don't know or understand, is that what the SBS does is it delivers Australian news in over 60 languages to people who are immigrants who are looking to integrate into Australian communities and understand what's happening in the country around them. And defunding that or eliminating that news service
stops actually those communities from trying to integrate. And Pauline basically couldn't respond to her and said, what, because you can lose your job. It was disgusting. And one other clip I want to quickly play is Pauline's response to a really important question from Sarah Martin at The Guardian.
Senator Hanson, Sarah Martin from The Guardian. Taxpayers are paying more than $150,000 a year for your daughter, Lee Hanson, to seemingly campaign full-time in Tasmania while employed as a political advisor for a New South Wales senator. Did you have any role in appointing her to that position? Honestly, you never give up.
I've never seen a person that's such a trashy journalist, you know, and what you put out all the time, you've got this obsession with constantly trying to pull down myself, my party or Mrs Reinhart, whatever you do. You will be banned from my answering. I'll answer you this question today.
She stood her ground so well and she's been relentless in exposing the financial mismanagement. And, you know, these are serious questions about, you know, corruption.
But that again is so Trump playbook that when someone asks a reasonable question that does corner them... You know, quiet, Pinky.
No, but that is right. And the other thing I am grateful for, and again, I find myself, I struggle to say this, Hanson does not have Trump's special sauce. She doesn't have the ability to speak and kind of wow the crowd in the way that Trump does. I don't think Trump has that anymore. No. No, but he did for a while.
And one of the things that I find interesting about Hanson and that room, yes, anyone can buy a ticket. We thought about going journalists who are members get priority. But also that room was filled with One Nation's team as well.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of Kyle Sandilands' settlement with ARN?
And I always like to say when my mind changed on something. Initially, when I was watching this and I saw the banner dropping down, I was like, no, no, no, no, no. I don't want to protest here because I don't want her to be able to like lean on this as like a conspiracy that furthers her message. As entertaining as it was, how did that happen? That was my question exactly.
The thing about the National Press Club is when you enter the building, I'm pretty sure like the room is on ground level. So if you understood the building, the facility, you could probably get in and out pretty quickly.
It's not like when I've been there, it's been obviously heavily staffed and busy, but I can imagine there are a lot of times when relatively few number of people are there off peak kind of out of hours. I'm not sure how someone would have got access, but I also think it's important to note that this is now being investigated.
Yeah.
So GetUp claimed credit for the protest sign. Now GetUp is like a, you know, political organisation. They're very much for workers, for unions is kind of their skew. They have a great Instagram account. I love their content. I love Hayden who runs their content. He's fantastic on social media. He's really, I think, brilliant. built a lot of momentum for GetUp in recent times as well.
The lead marketing manager, though, is David Shiraz, who's Brittany Higgins' husband. So GetUp claimed credit for the protest. And then the National Press Club's chief executive released a statement saying that David Shiraz was the GetUp representative who attended the address. And he said that David Shiraz was seen filming the incident on his phone.
And then after the banner had lowered, he left abruptly. The Press Club says they're considering legal action. And then ACT Policing, which is kind of the community arm of the Australian Federal Police, they say they're looking into the incident. They've received a complaint. So that's kind of the state of play.

Chapter 4: What did Pauline Hanson discuss in her National Press Club address?
Obviously, the media coverage of Pauline's Press Club was mixed. You had like, you know, news.com.au classic saying she smashed it out of the park, but needs to be careful of one thing, you know, the classic clickbait headlines. I've also seen a lot of people comparing her to Margaret Thatcher and Martin Luther and like a lot of positive coverage of Pauline Hanson recently.
The only thing I want to finish this story off with, though, which has been going viral the last few days, is did you see Gina Reinhart's speech at the National Bush Summit in Townsville last week?
No.
I want to show you this clip where Gina Reinhart says that we should give Queensland Islands to Elon Musk for free and suggests that Townsville in northern Queensland should be used as a base for Israel to make weapons.
I understand many veteran families still live in this area.
That important culture, a very important culture, could flourish again if we also offered free land, be that near Prairie if suitable or elsewhere near Townsville, for the Israelis and transport here for their skilled people, immediate families and equipment, and encourage the Israelis to develop and build their advanced war drones and or other
advances in defence and or improve upon their Israeli-style domes and manufacture them here to sell.
That's real. That's last Thursday. She also got Pauline Hanson up on stage and Gina asked the crowd to make a bulldozer noise along with her about bulldozing the red tape of the government. And she got Pauline Hanson on stage and she presented the a big bulldozer tour, like as in a toy bulldozer. What timeline are we in right now? Oh, we are in the most fucked up dystopian timeline.
But I will also say it is Gina Reinhart's statement around Israel and Townsville and giving, you know, Queensland Islands for free to Elon Musk. which is crazy, right? He's a trillionaire. Why would we give land for free? But I just want to be so clear that actually this is the thing that's had the most cut through with One Nation voters.
