Ep. 25: Monica Heck on post-partum Graves' disease

In this episode of Bits of Me, I talk to Monica Heck, a mother of two who was diagnosed with Graves' disease after having her first child. She started experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism about four months post-partum and has since been on different medication to help with thyroid dysfunction as well as antibodies as a result of her auto-immune condition. Monica talks about what it's like to live with an invisible illness, how it's impacted on her life and her sense of self, and the various ways in which it impacted on her breastfeeding and fertility journeys. She also shares her experience of suffering a miscarriage under the 8th amendment, and explains why she couldn't leave her now-home, Switzerland, for the inferior healthcare system in her beloved Ireland.
