Chapter 1: What were the highlights of the Blue Jays' win over the Red Sox?
All right. It is a post-game edition of Blair and Barker. You just got me today. Kevin's got the day off, and he'll be back tomorrow. We've got another afternoon game tomorrow. The Jays and the Chicago Cubs. From Lovely. I'm just kidding. From Wrigley Field. That's another one of those old ballparks I detest. So you just got me for the next hour.
We'll be joined in a few minutes by Ben Nicholson-Smith to take a look back at the Jays' 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox this afternoon. Boy, did that ever, ever, ever feel good to see the Jays win a game like that. Trey Savage on a day when John Schneider's bullpen was essentially down to just nothing. I wouldn't say the dregs, but was down to the bare minimum.
Trey Savage almost made it through eight innings, gave up back-to-back home runs, was really efficient early in the game. Really... Really did himself proud today in that 4-3 win. Vladdy hit a home run on like the third pitch of the game. That was his first home run since May 17th in Detroit. 89 at-bats between homers. For Vladdy, that's a 24-game homerless streak, if you're interested.
It is the Jays' second series sweep of the season. Their first was against the Athletics. It's their first sweep on the road since that memorable series last August against Colorado, where they scored like a bazillion runs. And, yeah, the first series sweep for the Jays at Fenway Park. Since 2023. So we mentioned the Jays are now one game under .500.
They've got a chance to hit the .500 mark tomorrow against the Chicago Cubs. We had some technical glitches with John Schneider's post-game interview during Blue Jays talk. Those have been rectified. So let's hear from the skipper following this afternoon's win.
Determines his attack value in fastballs. What's the say about him being
Yeah, man, that's an incredible at-bat, you know, and taking advantage of the drop pop-up.

Chapter 2: How did Trey Savage perform in the game against the Red Sox?
Crazy win, you know what I mean? Tough for both teams. But against a pitcher like that, closer like that, who's not only had the career but the year that he's having, man, Valley flipping around right-handed. Tremendous, tremendous composure in a bat.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think anything went wrong.
I think kind of just two fastballs that they kind of jumped him on. What went right was strike throwing. He was efficient. They were aggressive and rightfully so because he was in the zone and was cruising. You know what I mean? So we kept looking up at the pitch count and the innings where we were and probably on a different day.
You have, you know, some other help there in the in the seventh or eighth. But what he did today was exactly what we needed. But he was just on the attack all day.
You get to sweep four out of six. Does it feel like you guys are turning a corner maybe?
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I like the way we're playing. I like the way George is swinging the bat. You know, it's a big swing from Vladimir today to get us going. And I think guys kind of up and down are doing their part. You know, yesterday was base running and defense. Today, a little bit of everything, you know.
So, yeah, it's tough to sweep a series anywhere, especially here, especially against Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning. So, yeah, it was a good series. We talked about Vlade maybe once on the way for a while. Did you like that specific, obviously, result in the home run? Did you like that specific? That one, yeah, on a sinker, I think when Vlad's good, he can do that.
We've been talking to him for a while. I know we were joking. Sometimes it takes kind of a bloop hit to kind of get you going or just a productive day. I like that his first two at-bats he had intent with pitches in the middle of the zone.

Chapter 3: What significance does Vladdy Jr.'s home run hold for the Blue Jays?
I know the first one was kind of middle in but had the right kind of angle to it. I'll stick by it. You know, I'll keep saying it to you guys. You know, he's going to get going. He's going to start hitting some homers. But that's a really good swing again. It's a good pitcher.
And if you're on just there, obviously coming from someone off the rim, if you come out, what was the decision for him to stay on the end?
In the ninth inning, it was just, I mean, it happened really quick. You know, I already apologized to him. He was good, you know, kind of like jammed his shoulder a little bit on the diving play. And then, you know, you're talking through scenarios, myself and DeMarlo. If we had scored there, you want to keep your defense, your infield defense in there.
So we kind of relayed that to him a little bit late. So that was kind of the confusion. But I think once you take the lead, you want to keep him at short. say again yeah I thought he was great you know um you know retires the lefty retires a Bray you first pitch change up to a really good hitter in Contreras and um
Chapter 4: What does the series sweep mean for the Blue Jays' season?
Flew's got a lot of, what's the polite way to say this? He's got a lot of competitiveness in the right spots of his body. And I think that going back to kind of L.A. last year and the summertime getting that save, he's not going to back down. So he handled it really well. Him and Tommy were ready to go and both did their part.
I think you know just the timing of the season it's nice to get a little bit of momentum when you know sweeping a series on the road on a family trip when everyone's got their kids here and they're kind of pulling double duty to off the field. I think it was the way we did it, a little bit of everything, you know, between pitching, defense, offense, and base running. So that's the part I like.
I thought we kind of played pretty complete baseball these three games.
There you go, John Schneider, the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays after today's 4-3 win. And yeah, a good, you know, look, the Red Sox are a god-awful team, especially at home. But a good win, a good series win for the Blue Jays. Lots of good signs. Some issues in the bases today with Jesus Sanchez, but by and large, pretty clean series.
And we started to see some slug between George Springer hitting his 300th career home run and hitting a couple of doubles and Vladdy taking the third pitch of the game into the green monster, over the green monster, I should say, or into the seats, I guess, technically into the green monster seats today. You know, just a real good win for the Blue Jays.
And Brandon Valenzuela with what turned out to be the game-winning double Off the wall, and this is from Chris Block of Sportsnet. That was against Aroldis Chapman. It was a nine-pitch at bat, which is the longest played appearance against Aroldis Chapman this season. Aroldis Chapman's very good. He's elite.
And opposing hitters in two strike counts were hitting .091 with one extra base hit against Chapman coming into today. So the Jays literally won the game by beating someone who doesn't get beat most of the time. A big win for the Blue Jays, one game under .500. And as we said, they're off to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs in the three-game series starting tomorrow.
Let's bring in Ben Nicholson-Smith, Sportsnet's MLB insider and Blue Jays reporter. How you doing, Ben?
Doing great, Jeff. I was actually just listening to you and show, so I'm a little bit up to date on your opinions on the Jays.

Chapter 5: What insights does Ben Nicholson-Smith provide about the series?
They felt they have veteran pitchers on their team. They felt they have a young star in PCA that's going to lead the way, and he's probably going to do that. He's sure showing signs of that over the last month. So there are good players on the team, but are they good enough to give up some of that young talent to try to get Scooble and win? I'll just tell you this, Jeff, after this year,
they lose most of their pitching staff. They're almost all free agents other than Ben Brown, who's been a revelation for them coming out of the bullpen and now being one of their best starters. Javier Assad, they have, you know, they have Steele, who's supposed to come back after almost two years of missing pitching because of Tommy John surgery and then
re-injuring it a little bit earlier in the year. So they don't have a lot. I would say they will be one of the teams that will try to win a World Series, and they will attempt to add somebody like Schuvel if they're close. If they're not, they could go the other way and be the latest version of a team that is going to rebuild, even though they're in a big market. What...
Bruce, what happened to Matt Shaw? I mean, I've been around long enough to not necessarily pay attention to all the prognostications that are made when a young guy comes up. But this guy certainly had a lot of people talking when he came up.
And what have you seen or not seen from him that has kind of contributed to what seems to be from a distance, kind of a stutter step approach almost to his major league career? I mean, he's not old. He's under 24, I think.
No, I don't think you have it analyzed right now, Jeff. He's actually hitting the ball pretty well right now, and he just hasn't had an opportunity. So what the Cubs did was they had a guy that was third. He was third at third base in gold glove consideration. So he was in the finalist as a rookie. The second half of last year, he hit better than anybody on the Cubs, and that's not saying a lot.
And recently, he's coming back, but prep counselors use him as a platoon player only, so against left-handers, and he doesn't have a starting position until recently, and that's been because of the fact that Suzuki has an injured knee, and he hasn't been playing right field, but But there's great hope and feelings that Shaw is actually a star player of the future for the Cubs still.
The problem is that they replaced him with Bregman and they didn't have another spot open for him.
Right. So they kind of took it out of his hands in some ways. But he would certainly be a guy that other teams would be interested in. But if you're the Cubs, could you see any world at all where he would be involved in a trade?

Chapter 6: What challenges are the Cubs facing this season?
But anyhow. It'll be a fun series. It's always fun when the Jays are in Chicago. There'll be a lot of Toronto fans there. So... That's it for us. Fan Drive is next. We'll be back tomorrow following the Jays game with Blair and Barker. Have yourself a great day.
