Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

Each morning, we're up early putting together the latest episode of Bloomberg Daybreak U.S. Edition. Edition podcast each morning for the stories that matter with the context you need. Find us on Apple, Spotify, or anywhere you listen. News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Monica Ricks. Death to America. That's what they were chanting in Iran's parliament overnight after its speaker said the U.S.
military and Israel would be, quote, legitimate targets if America strikes the Islamic Republic. Protests against the government are now entering their third week in the country, and President Trump's threatened to intervene if violence against them continues. I've made the statement very strongly that if they start killing people like they have in the past, we will get involved.
We'll be hitting them very hard where it hurts. And that doesn't mean boots on the ground, but it means hitting them very, very hard where it hurts. At least 116 people have been killed. Here at home, big protests are happening in several big cities across the country this weekend following ICE-involved shootings in Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon.
That one in Minneapolis where thousands gathered to honor Renee Goode. Her death has sparked the sharpest national debate over whether the officer was justified in using deadly force. To see Trump warning the Iranian government not to shoot peaceful protesters, Yet his own agents are doing that here in America. This is beyond appalling.
Critics say video footage and witness accounts did not show an imminent threat. And members of Congress are now considering possible consequences for ICE. Lawmakers are demanding a full investigation of the shooting death and possible policy changes over law enforcement raids.
Some Democrats have even suggested funding cuts to ICE operations and want Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem impeached, though that's unlikely to happen. The organization that oversees the Nobel Peace Prize is dashing talks of Venezuela's opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, giving her award to President Trump, despite Machado saying she'd give it to him for capturing Nicolás Maduro.
The Nobel Institute says the prize can't be revoked, transferred or shared with others. And that decision stands. The Smithsonian just revealed President Trump's new portrait and removed most of the text with it that mentions his two impeachments and January 6th.
The portrait replaces a photo of former President Biden, which guests first see when they enter the exhibit at the museum, which follows the president in chronological order. Former President Clinton's plaque still includes info on his impeachment.

Chapter 2: What recent threats has Iran made against the US and Israel?
Delta will also be the first major airline to report earnings for the quarter tomorrow, and it's expected to deliver a positive forecast thanks to strong demand for premium seats. But analysts do believe profits got crimped by the government shutdown and weather disruptions around Christmas that caused massive delays and cancellations.
The Supreme Court's expected to hand down more opinions this week, including a possible ruling on challenges to President Trump's tariffs. Mary Lovely is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and says the markets are waiting. It's really about how expansive the president's powers are relative to the Congress.
And we've seen some indication lately that the court may be willing to begin to clip President Trump's wings a tiny bit. If tariffs are overturned, the U.S. government would have to pay back billions in refunds, with more than 1,000 companies expected to sue. Attention turns to inflation in the week ahead. We get more on that from Bloomberg's Karen Moscow.
The Consumer Price Index is out on Tuesday, and it could show a modest increase in headline inflation.
Chapter 3: What are the implications of protests in Iran against the government?
We also get new home sales figures, and J.P. Morgan will kick off big bank earnings. Wednesday is the Producer Price Index, as well as retail sales, existing home sales, and the Federal Reserve's Beige Book Survey of Regional Economic Conditions. We also get earnings from Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup.
Thursday is the weekly report on initial jobless claims, and we'll hear from Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Industrial production is out on Friday. Karen, Moscow. Bloomberg Radio. Walmart will replace AstraZeneca on the Nasdaq 100 index later this month. The changes are set to take effect before the market opens on January 20th, since markets are closed on the 19th for MLK Day.
Walmart's market value has climbed nearly a trillion dollars, thanks in big part to its sales growth, expanded digital operations, and increased use of AI. Thousands of nurses in New York City could hit the picket line tomorrow in what could be the largest nurses strike in the city's history.
Donya Munoz is one of about 16,000 nurses who could walk off the job if there's no contract deal between their union and five privately run New York City hospitals. We need fair contracts now because I know that people are going to suffer and that is not what we want. Nurses want better pay and benefits, increased staffing and safer working conditions. Couple wildcard wins in the NFL. The L.A.
Rams beat the Carolina Panthers yesterday 34-31. And the Chicago Bears scored a W, edging out the Green Bay Packers 31-27. And in case you missed it, Deadheads are mourning the loss of Bob Weir. The Grateful Dead's guitarist, singer, and founding member died yesterday at 78. And that's news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Monica Ricks and this is Bloomberg. This is Caroline Hyde.
