Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.448 - 20.065 Karen Moscow

News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Karen Moscow and President Trump is sending his border czar Tom Holman to Minneapolis in the wake of two deadly shootings around immigration enforcement. Bloomberg government's Jonathan Tamari reports the president may be acknowledging a heavy-handed approach has its limits.

20.045 - 34.102 Jonathan Tamari

Having these two shootings in such close proximity, and in this second instance, having members of his administration make some claims and statements that were just blatantly false about it, I think has turned a lot of public opinion against the president.

Chapter 2: What recent events in Minneapolis are impacting President Trump's policies?

34.803 - 51.263 Jonathan Tamari

I think even he and some of his advisors think that this is not going the way that they want it to go. Many voters are saying that it's not what they expected. Even though they want border enforcement, they strongly disagree with the tactics that are playing out here. And you're even seeing some concerns from Senate Republicans.

And Bloomberg Government's Jonathan Tamari reports more Republicans are calling for independent investigations into the shooting deaths of Rene Good and Alex Preddy. The Washington Post reports House Democrats plan to open an investigation into Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as soon as next week. At least 145 Democrats have signed on to a resolution calling for Noem's impeachment.

The government is at a risk of a partial shutdown at the end of the week amid the bipartisan backlash over Alex Preddy's killing. Senate Democrats are threatening to block a massive spending bill unless it leaves out funds for DHS or includes new safeguards for ICE and Border Patrol.

91.038 - 102.212 Karen Moscow

The controversy in Minneapolis could hang over President Trump as he heads to Iowa this afternoon to pitch his economic message, and Bloomberg's Kasia Klimaczynska has more from Washington.

102.192 - 116.452 Kostya Klimasinska

He is planning to focus his message on affordability, on economic issues. So that's also, of course, an effort to divert Americans' attention to, you know, their grocery bills and what they pay at gas stations every day.

116.692 - 133.737 Karen Moscow

And that's Bloomberg's Kostya Klimasinska, who reports Iowa could provide a reset if President Trump stays on message and the situation in Minnesota does not get worse. More airlines are canceling flights today with another Arctic blast in the forecast. Benedict Campbell has Bloomberg's aviation coverage.

133.817 - 154.407 Benedict Campbell

It's less the snow at this point and more the freeze. So you have a lot of de-icing activity on the ground that's delaying operations and actually canceling some flights. But it appears we are through the worst at this moment. We heard from Sean Duffy, the transport secretary, yesterday saying that he hopes things to be back to normal by tomorrow. So we'll see about that.

154.387 - 173.509 Karen Moscow

And that's Bloomberg's Benedict Campbell who says more than 1,500 flights have been cancelled this morning on top of the more than 6,100 yesterday. Europe calling it the mother of all deals. The European Union has sealed a free trade agreement with India after more than two decades of negotiations. And we get more with Bloomberg's Oliver Crook in Brussels.

173.489 - 189.53 Oliver Crook

The India trade deal, this is something that Ursula von der Leyen and the European Union really want to take a victory lap on because India is notoriously one of the nations with the highest trade barriers across the world. And what the EU is now saying is that their companies will have preferential access to that market. So I'll give you just the top line of kind of what we can expect here.

Chapter 3: How are Senate Democrats responding to the recent controversies?

358.587 - 364.973 Karen Moscow

And that's news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Karen Moscow, and this is Bloomberg.
