Chapter 1: What happened in the Blue Jays vs. Cubs game?
All right, Kevin, I figured we were done with these things. I guess not. The Chicago Cubs beating Barker's Blue Jays 16-2 at Wrigley Field today. How dare you. Lots to talk about in this game. But we want you to be part of this, and you can do that by leaving a voice note, 416-413-3959. Name and location, please. The text line is open, 590-590.
I mean, I guess, you know, well, seven run first against Kevin Gossman reminded me an awful lot of a start he had in April 27th last year, if you remember, is against the New York Yankees. He had a six run third inning, gave up five walks. in that start. The only difference in that game was that he was ejected by the home plate umpire, Chris Conroy.
He was getting squeezed repeatedly throughout the game. Kevin, that wasn't the case tonight, or this afternoon. Kevin Gossman, just, I mean, all you need to know is he threw twice as many sliders as he normally throws. And, well, I mean, he didn't get a play made by Jesus Sanchez in the first inning. And, I mean, that was pretty much the ballgame.
Yeah, I mean, if he catches the ball right, it's 1-0 going into the second inning. And, you know, you can sort of live to fight another day. When it's 7-0, the game's over, right? Offensively, you just don't have enough mustard in your lineup to come back from – down that many runs. You know, you'd mentioned the throwing more sliders than split fingers. You could just tell.
Even after the first two batters that he'd walked, you could just tell he was fighting whatever he was fighting. Every once in a while, you know, as a guy that's been around as long as Kevin has, you've got two pitches. Obviously, you know, he's added the third and the slider. Sometimes you just don't have it. You know, for whatever reason, like there's no rhyme or reason for it.
There's no, you know, solution. There's no self-correcting. None of that.
Look at how good he was in that last start.
You know what? You know what?

Chapter 2: Why did Kevin Gausman struggle in the first inning?
He'll probably come out in his next start and be just fine. Probably, right? The fastball command, how big the misses were. You know, the telecast kept talking about how the split finger was down. Those misses there was down. Most of the time when he does miss a little bit like that, he can self-correct.
He can start his lanes a little higher, have those pitches a little bit more competitive, getting guys to swing it.
pitches that you know normally he'd have him swing at today he just didn't but that play in right field you just can't have that this late in the season and you know sometimes i say when you get your tail kick like this you get taken behind the woodshed you wadded up you throw it in the garbage i don't think you can do that no i'm with this well you know with the as bad as the defense is with sanchez right field you know if he moves at all you're holding your breath
You just can't have that. Like, so for me going forward, you got to fix that. I don't know how you fix that because, you know, it's not like they got a bunch of dudes driving their runs other than Springer right now, right? So, you know, he is a threat in the lineup where they're putting him in a lineup when he does play against the righties.
You know, he's not playing a ton against lefties if ever. It's just defensively, you know, and then we saw him with the bases loaded, that play where, you know, he freezes, he comes in, he gets bad jumps, he runs bad routes. Like, it's just a circus.
And this late in the season with the team that you're playing on, with them fighting and clawing to get back in it, Jeff, you just can't have this any longer. So going forward, they've got to figure this out. And if you noticed, it's rare if ever you see John sort of show frustration. He showed it.
Not only that, it's rare if ever you see Kevin. Absolutely. And you can see Kevin turn around and just kind of with his arms. Yeah. I mean, you know, I can't put it any other way. I'm not going to say Jesus Sanchez cost them this game. He didn't help. He didn't help, and he is obviously not very good.
We've talked about this from the start of the year, and hello to those of you joining us now on Sportsnet and the TV side. We're just busy. hammering the living hell out of Jesus Sanchez. No, I'm just kidding. I'm not really hammering the living hell out of him. It's a circus. I've seen it before. Yeah, it is a circus. And, you know, they've done extra work with him.
You talked about Mark Budzinski, all the extra work they've done with him.

Chapter 3: What impact did Jesús Sánchez's misplays have on the game?
Brady hit her, the ball's cutting away from him.
He's a little timid. The righty with two strikes, right? You know, where your positioning's at, the late jump that you get. You know, you're in between. You don't run hard. You run hard, and you're timid. You don't want to run into the fence like there was a lot of things going on there. The reality of the story is you need to catch those balls all the time.
And when you don't, you know, players that have been around for a long time are going to show frustration. This is the part of the season where they're in win mode. And the veteran guys around this team, I just think, are tired of having the conversation about the defense, the base running. Now, it's been better lately because we're scoring a few more runs.
But I think when a guy's on the mound struggling the way Kevin was, and I think you could tell that two batters in, Jeff. Like, he just looked different. Yeah, just looked different. Like, normally he can get in on the tracks. He just, for whatever reason, couldn't do that. And he needs his dudes to pick him up. And he didn't. It just sort of fell off the tracks. And when it's 7-0, good luck.
Yeah, and, you know, look –
The carryover from this game is something we're going to watch. We know before the game that Jay sent out Chad Dallas, brought up Brendan Little. I'll tell you what, man. I hope that's the last I see of Brendan Little.
I'm here with that. It's the big leagues, man. I think the walk and a guy in with the bases loaded, that's enough.
That's unforgivable in that situation. I'd rather you go at a guy and give up a home run. Absolutely. And Brendan Little, you know, he had some usefulness last year. I think we've gone down this road enough with Brendan Little. But, again, criticizing them for moving Chad Dallas is silly.
I mean, if you're going to make a move, if you're going to make any move at all, if you feel that you need to get a reliever up here, and clearly after that Boston series, because, again, this goes back to Dylan Sties' lack of efficiency in his start, followed up by a bullpen day. They needed another arm up here. They really did.

Chapter 4: How is the bullpen affected by Gausman's performance?
Again, when all of these things are taking place this late in the season, and you're on the road, and you've won three in a row, and you've got one of your better dudes on the mound, you've got to make those plays behind him when you're done. It imploded, and that's what happened.
Yeah, and this was a chance to get to 500, too. You know, we're at that point where, you know, you're looking for little, for baby steps. And, you know, getting to 500 is for this team, anyhow. Winning series, getting to 500. That's kind of a goal.
There were some good things, though. George Springer was really good. George continued to look good. Other than little, for me, the bullpen was really good. I mean, the bullpen did what the bullpen had to do, right? Maybe you didn't want to pitch, but you had to pitch because one of your guys was going through it, and that's kind of what happened.
I've got to say this, though. Boy, this is going to be kind of sacrilegious because I know everybody loves him. I watched Rodgers pitch, and I – The ball is in play an awful lot. I know that. And when the ball's in play, weird stuff happens. And I just keep wondering what that looks like in the playoffs if you're in a close game. And I know we're way too early to talk. But you know what I mean.
I mean, would you rather see him in the seventh inning than the eighth or ninth inning in a big game? I'm talking a big game when you're biting your nails? Probably. But right now, it's just not the case, right? I mean, he's one of their dudes. He's one of their two guys with Hoffman as kind of their close second.
Yeah, we should also point out, by the way, that those runs, what were they? Five unearned runs in the seventh inning. David Schneider playing at second base today because Ernie Clement had the day off. Or didn't have the day off. Ernie Clement had a sore hip. The 11 walks didn't help. No, the 11 walks didn't help.
I mean, one of those was from a pitcher.
Six of them ended up scoring. A position player. Yeah. And we should also mention, of course, Vladdy coming out of the game after that one swing kind of pulling his back.
Yeah, it's hit the fan a little. I mean, you know, they're on a roll. They'd won some games. They'd beat the, you know, the ugly Red Sox because they can't hit. And then they come here.

Chapter 5: What are the next steps for Brendan Little after his appearance?
Uh, Kevin Gossman, by the way, reaching 2000 career innings, not the way he'd want to do it, but man, oh man, that is a, that is a milestone, uh, in this day and age, especially a milestone, um, for a starting pitcher. What else do we have to talk about here? Talked about the slider. What was I talking about? Made another note here. Well, we already talked about that with Sanchez as well. Yeah.
I just, I don't know what, um, I don't know what the Jays do. I did hear what Joe said in the telecast. I'm with Joe. I'm not a fan of putting George in the outfield. No chance. I want, especially now that George has given me what he's given me, I just want him going up to the plate and hitting. Boom. It's not George's fault they don't have anybody who can catch the damn ball in right field.
Now that'll change hopefully when Addison Barger gets back. Then it gets interesting. We were talking about this off air, huh? I'm with you. I really don't care if I see Jesus Sanchez in the outfield anymore. I have no idea what usefulness he would have. I guess he could use him off the bench as a pinch hitter. But, man, I get Addison Barger back.
Give me Miles Straw out there and Lucas and Barger and – have guys that are catching the ball.
Yeah, I would think that it would be determined on who's on the mound for the Jays, right? If they're a fly ball pitcher, that's when you'd probably not put him out there. If they're guys that, you know, put the ball on the ground, maybe that's when you put him in right field if you want to. Here's John.
Let's go to the skipper, John Schneider.
You don't really see Kev walk that many guys. I think just command with everything. And then never really settled in. It's uncharacteristic of him. And a lot of pitches in two innings and in this stretch. Just wanted to make sure he's good for the next one. How did you see the fly ball to Sanchez and Ray?
Yeah, I mean, it's tricky here with the wind and the sun, the wall being right there close to the foul line. Haven't really looked at it yet. In-depth did quick on the iPad. I'm sure every major league outfielder is going to tell you if they get their glove on it, they want to catch it. So kind of a 50-50 play, I guess, but one that we're accustomed to making. What can you tell us about Vlad?
He's doing all right. I think... just kind of on the one swing, just a little bit tight with his back. And it seemed like that may have been a game that he was coming out of anyway. But I just want to be careful. Just check with him. He's feeling better. Nothing like what it was when he missed a couple games. So unless anything changes, I think he should be good to go for tomorrow.

Chapter 6: What did John Schneider say about the team's performance?
And, yeah, I mean, bases loaded with one out. to throw a hanging slider is not the best spot to do it. And like I said, just put my team in a hole from the first inning and after.
There you go. That is Kevin Gossman today's starter in the 16-2 loss to the Cubs. So that does answer your question. We did ask about possibly going out for a third inning. That apparently was a call from Pete and John not to do it.
I guess.
Because he didn't want him to throw 90 pitches.
Why not? I'd say why not. If I'm Kevin, I'm sure Kevin said the exact same thing I'm saying. Why not? I mean, I know where my pen's at. I know what I haven't done today. How dare I? Because I'm not in there. But, boy, every once in a while, because of what you don't have, Jeff, you just got to say, okay, coach, it's just one of them days where I get what you're saying.
But today, boy, just give me the ball. Hopefully I can go out there and at least give you one more inning to get it to the fourth inning. and then that way you can do what you need to do. Maybe you can bring in Tommy Nance instead of Fisher.
I was going to say, if I give you that other inning, I'm eliminating a bullpen arm, which means I'm saving an arm for tomorrow.
Absolutely.
Did he say change-up? He mentioned change-up. Yeah, that's why I looked at you. Yeah, and he's said a couple of times in spring training about working in a change-up, but he's always kind of had that smile when he said it. Like, you know, I kind of want to plant the seed, you know, in the mind of the opposition.
