22 Oct 2025

Description

Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees introduces Lily Owens, a young white girl in 1964 South Carolina haunted by the memory of her mother's death. After her Black caregiver, Rosaleen, is assaulted for trying to register to vote, Lily and Rosaleen flee their abusive home and journey to Tiburon, South Carolina. There, they are taken in by the Boatwright sisters, three Black beekeepers with a mysterious connection to Lily's mother. Through shared experiences, the sisters, and the local Daughters of Mary, Lily confronts her past, discovers truths about her mother, and finds a nurturing community that helps her understand love, loss, and the complexities of identity and race during a pivotal time in American history.
