good tuesday morning not a ton happening in sports but it's about to happen because the next few weekends the next seven weeks everything goes crazy from college basketball to obviously the wbc into opening day if you're like us and you're fired up about the masters of course you got that conference tournament starts next week
Hopefully the NHL season ends very quickly for Boomer because another loss last night on home ice for the New York Rangers. You got that. And even when I go away, there's two things I cannot get away from. One is Sayville because I saw standing in the water on St. John someone from Sayville who went to Sayville High School and still lives in Sayville. And the Jets! The Jets.
I can't get away from the Jets. Hey, where are you from? New York. Oh, you a Jets fan? No, I'm not a Jets fan, actually. So make fun of something else. Good morning, Boomer. How are you? Yeah, I'm doing well, G. And welcome back, man. And hopefully your trip was great. Hopefully the family was great. And you enjoyed yourself. Today is a big day in the NFL, specifically for those Jets.
Because today is the day that you either come to an agreement with Brees Hall on a contract extension or you're going to probably place the transition tag on him or the franchise tag. And they have until 4 o'clock today to decide how this is going to go down with their talented running back. And it's very interesting. Other teams are dealing with this, too.
And then there's also the restricted free agents that you're going to have to deal with eventually. And the Jets have a couple of those guys. I mean, the league era, as we were talking yesterday with Jerry, starts really next week on the 11th. But the tampering period starts on the 9th. That's right. We're going to be talking about these free agents flying around on Monday. That's right.
And there are going to be a lot of teams that have to spend money. I think I told you this. I think that both the Rams and the Saints have to spend a lot of money because of the rolling salary cap number that you have to get to in terms of the floor. And for the last couple of years, they have been under that. So now they have to make up for that.
And I would expect the Rams and the Saints will be, you know, going after free agents left and right. And I would also think that the Jets will probably go after a couple, including quarterbacks. But, yeah, this is the time of the year that the NFL now starts to take shape after the combine. And you saw some of the combine numbers, I'm sure. There's some really impressive players out there.
But I always say buyer beware because, you know, they are human beings. And just because they can jump and run – Doesn't mean that they're going to turn into the next Ray Lewis. Yeah, I mean, we've seen it all. Obviously, we've seen guys who can't run a 40 and Tom Brady become the best player to ever play the game. We've seen guys like Vernon Golston be the combine hero and can't play football.

Chapter 2: What are the Jets' plans for the upcoming NFL offseason?
Now, I'm not saying that the quarterback that they draft this year, whether it be Ty Simpson or Carson Beck or Drew Aller, I'm not saying that that player is going to play like Jackson Dart did last year. I'm not saying that. I'm saying that's a project player.
That's a player that maybe you bring in and you develop and maybe all of a sudden he catches, you know, he's mature enough to handle it and you see it in the middle of the season and maybe by that time you give him a shot. But until that time happens, you have to do what the Giants did. You have to have those veteran stopgap guys, and I think they're going to be two new guys.
I don't think it's going to be Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. And who are those guys? And if you do bring in one of those guys, do you tell him that he has the opportunity to be the starter by signing the contract coming here like they did with Russell Wilson? And then the other guy comes in like Jameis Winston, and he is the clear backup guy. And there's really not a competition.
It's just about getting the offense off the ground and running with the quarterback that Frank would believe in, that Darren Muji would believe in, and then they could get going. And then the question comes down to how many games do you really want to win? I mean, you've got to win because the owner is going to want you to win.
And if you don't win and you have these quarterbacks and then you have another pick and all these picks next year in 2027, which they are loaded for, you know, can you package one of those picks to a team that maybe has a bad year for whatever reason? Maybe their star quarterback gets hurt kind of like what happened with Washington.
And all of a sudden that team gets the number one pick and next year you're sitting there with three first-rounders assuming you're holding on to all of those. after this year is over, or maybe you pick another one. Who knows? But then you trade with that team that's sitting there at number one who already has their quarterback.
Yeah, I agree with all of that, and there could be one of those teams. Plus, there's going to be multiple quarterbacks, and this feels like a one-quarterback draft right now as far as the game-changer guys. If you hear all the experts coming up next year, there's going to be more of those game-changer guys, at least offensively. As far as Brees Hall goes, I'm not franchise tagging him.
I'm not transition tagging him. I'm letting him go. This is a guy who, remember when Harrison Phillips was talking about just how poisoned everybody was from losing and losing and losing? That's all Brees Hall knows. And it's the same thing with Sauce Gardner and the same thing with Quinn and Williams where they leave and they're like, man, this is the greatest thing in the world.
We wanted it to work out for the Jets, but it just was never going to work out. And Brees Hall's indicated many, many times, you know, sometimes passive aggressively, sometimes aggressively that he doesn't want to be here. And then when he gets really called out and he goes, no, no, no, it's not what I meant. It's not what I meant. Of course, it's what you meant.

The best story in the NBA this year thus far has to be the Boston Celtics. Has to be. Nobody thought that they were going to be the number two seed in the Eastern Conference.
With all their success throughout the years, they can't be the best story in anything. Unless they had, I don't know, an 80-year-old man who was leading the league in rebounds, and that'd be a good story. But they're the Celtics, for God's sakes. That was enough already. It's like enough with the Celtics.
You know, a good story's got to be, I don't know, maybe Victor Wimbinyama's new, you know, how good he's been. But the Celtics can't be the best story. Well, they're doing this without Jason Tatum, who, by the way, is participating in five-on-five drills in practice. And I would think that he's going to be back towards the end of the year here. Celtics, Lakers, blech. Yeah, blech.
Well, here is your future Nick, most likely, and Giannis. It's been a tough, tough season for him, specifically because of the injury and why this has challenged him so much. I've been dealing with knee pain in the past. It's totally different. You know, if you're not able to take care of your soft tissue injuries, they can linger. And I think that's what has happened this year.
So get ready for Giannis and his lingering soft tissues. Here come the Knicks. Boo. I did not take care of the hammer string. Maybe he and John Carlin can get together and work it out together. Maybe. And someone can open up a bag of chips. Yes. College basketball tonight. St. John's plays Georgetown.
Rick, so we had Danny Hurley employing the fans to show up for that game against Creighton a few weeks ago. Yes, it was Creighton, yeah. They show up, they get blown out. This is not going to happen to St. John's tonight, but I work Patino imploring the students to show up at the guard tonight. Senior night against Georgetown. They go out about six hours of yesterday. Do they still do that?
They do, yeah. Even for a guy that may only be here for a year? They still do it. They still have senior night? Which I think is goofy. You gave them a check for $150,000. How much? Maybe $1.5 million. Right. It's not senior night. It's more like parents night because they go out there, the parents are there, they give them the flowers, the whole thing. That's what it's really about.
